RICHARDSON, Texas (Baseball) – It's his world. We all just live in it. Some may even say he helped out his own cause. No. 26 Texas A&M University-Kingsville senior
Hayden Vesely swept the Lone Star Conference weekly awards Tuesday, collecting hitter and co-pitcher of the week honors after hitting .583 with eight RBI and tossing a shutout.
Vesely was a one-man wrecking crew against the nationally-ranked and league-leading Angelo State University Rams last week, tallying seven hits, eight RBI and four doubles at the plate. The Victoria, Texas native went 1-for-3 with a walk and RBI in game one versus the Rams and followed with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate in game two Friday, collecting two doubles, two runs and two RBI. A day later, the senior went 3-for-4 at the dish with two doubles and six RBI.
Vesely matched his performance at the plate with a gem on the mound, going the distance in a two-hit shutout over No. 30 Angelo State. The senior struck out seven and allowed just two hits in the victory. At one point, he retired 15 consecutive batters and allowed the two hits in the first and seventh frames. The 7.0 innings are a career-high for the right-hander.
On the year, Vesely is batting .345 in 2016 with 13 doubles, six triples, 33 RBI and eight swipes. On the mound, he has 44 punchouts in 34.2 innings and is 3-1 with two saves.
The Javelinas head to No. t-10/t-17 St. Edward's University Wednesday after the game was postponed due to weather Tuesday.
