PORTALES, N.M. (Baseball) – Looking at the box score, you may be inclined to overlook just how dominant the Javelina pitching staff was Saturday at Greyhound Field. The Javelina pitching staff tossed back-to-back complete games as left-handers
Jacob Foitek and
Preston Plovanich earned victories for #RV/30 Texas A&M University-Kingsville (16-6, 8-3 LSC). The Javelina offense continued to showcase their prowess with 19 runs in game one and six in game two to take the doubleheaders, 19-3, and 6-0, over Eastern New Mexico University (8-17, 1-10 LSC).
Game OneThe Javelina offense continued to put up historic numbers with 19 more runs in the game one 19-3 victory over the Greyhounds. Three big innings allowed Texas A&M-Kingsville to run away with the victory, highlighted by an eight-run fifth allowed the Javelinas to match last night's runs total.
Hunter Perkins and
Pablo Hernandez went yard,
Brayton Carlson went 5-for-5 from the leadoff spot and Foitek tossed a complete game in the victory to improve to 1-0 on the year.
Foitek allowed three runs – two earned – in 7.0 innings of work and went the distance to earn the win while J'Daylin Jackson (2-4) was tagged with the loss after giving up 11 runs – six earned – in 2.2 innings.
Carlson added four runs and two RBI, Perkins finished 2-for-4 with three runs and RBI to go with his home run, Hernandez posted a long ball and three ribbies and
Jimmy Roche was 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Hayden Vesely,
Ruben Almaguer and
Christian Caudle each tallied two hits.
A five-spot opened up the game for the Javelinas as TAMUK was able to bring in five runs on five hits in the leadoff frame. Carlson began the game with a single to left and advanced into scoring position on
Zach Smith's sacrifice bunt. Almaguer drove in Smith on a double and scored on Roche's single. After Perkins followed Roche's base knock with a hit of his own, Hernandez emptied the bases with his second home run in as many games, this time with two runners on, to give the Javs a 5-0 lead.
Eastern New Mexico scored a run in the first, but TAMUK got it back on an error in the second. Continuing the trend, the Javelinas added five more runs in the third on six hits, beginning with a leadoff solo shot by Perkins. An error brought in the innings second and third runs, followed by Vesely's and Roche's RBI singles.
The Greyhounds scored a run in the bottom frame to make it an 11-2 ballgame, but the Javelina offense collected eight runs in the fifth for their third big inning of the game to take a 19-2 lead. Back-to-back walks with the bases juiced brought in the inning's first two runs and a hit by pitch plated the third. A fielder's choice brought in two more runs, followed by a wild pitch and two-run single by Carlson.
ENMU scored one more run in the seventh but Kingsville took the second game 19-3.
Scoring the 19 runs in consecutive games marked the most runs Texas A&M-Kingsville has scored in back-to-back games since the 1998 season when the Javelinas exploded for 19 runs versus Central Oklahoma, 21 runs versus Tarleton State University and 20 again against the Texans in the 1998 Lone Star Conference Tournament (May 9-10).
Game TwoThe Javelinas were able to load the bases with one out and a run came in on Caudle's sacrifice fly to give Texas A&M-Kingsville a 1-0 lead.
Another run came in to score in the third on Vesely's RBI double after Smith, who reached on a walk and stole second, crossed the plate.
Kingsville tacked on two more runs in the fourth on
Wesley Aguilar's two-run single to take a 4-0 lead.
After a couple of scoreless innings, the offense again clicked for two more runs in the seventh as the insurance runs came in on RBI hits by Smith and Vesely. Caudle led off the inning with a single and was plated on Smith's single and Smith came around to score on Vesely's double as Texas A&M-Kingsville took game two, 6-0.
Plovanich went the distance in game two to pick up the W to improve to 1-0, striking out six in the shutout victory.
Vesely went 2-for-3 with two RBI, Aguilar drove in two runs, Caudle was 2-for-2 with two runs and Smith scored two runs in the latter game.
James Thomas (0-1) picked up the loss after allowing six runs in 6.2 innings.
