KINGSVILLE, Texas (Men's Basketball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (2-0) will play its next two games against Texas A&M International-University (2-0). The first meeting will be at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building on Tuesday, November 15 at 7 p.m. One week later they will play again at the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center at 7:30 p.m.
The Javelinas picked up two wins on opening weekend against Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines. The team averaged 73.5 points in the contests and have outscored their opponents 94-71 in the second half. TAMUK has been a force defensively, holding their opponents to 60.5 points per game due to a 35.1% defensive field goal percentage and an 11.50 turnover margin, two statistics that sits at the top of the Lone Star Conference.Â
Duan Wright leads the Hogs with 16.5 points per game (PPG) and 7.5 rebounds per game. Trey Sumpter follows with 15.5 points per contest with a field goal percentage of 63.2 including 58.3% from downtown, both ranking second in the LSC. Derrick Byrd leads with eight dimes in two games to go along with an 11-point average that rounds out all double-digit scorers. Caelan Neal has shown his quick hands defensively as he ties for first in the conference with seven steals in the young season.Â
International enters the match with two wins over both Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines as well. The matchup against the Dustdevils will be a good one, seeing their 62.4 scoring defense leads the Heartland conference and they guard the three ball well as they hold its opponents to a 22.2 shooting percentage. However, their achilles could be that they are prone to turning the ball over with a turnover margin of -1.20.Â
Denzel Bellot and Kenny Hatch lead the team with 14.8 and 10.4 PPG, respectively. Ballot shoots 55% from the floor and has made exactly half of his shots attempted from beyond the arc. Hatch leads the team with 21 assists, seven steals and also 17 turnovers. Other notable players consists of Bunja Yaboe who averages nine points and has a team-high of 23 rebounds and Jordan VanDekop who scores 7.6 PPG and has gathered 11 assists. Â
