KINGSVILLE, Texas (Baseball) – #RV/RV Texas A&M University-Kingsville (26-17) rallied from behind to take a lead in the seventh but No. 23/22 St. Edward's University (32-10) capitalized on late-inning defensive miscues to defeat the Javelinas, 5-3, on Tuesday evening at Nolan Ryan Field.
Â
Weston Silverberg came into the game in the eighth and threw a 1-2-3 inning, but two errors in the ninth proved to be costly for the Javelinas as St. Edward's scored three runs in the frame to over Texas A&M-Kingsville, 5-3. Silverberg was hit with the loss, falling to 3-1 on the year and Cam Hatch improved to 4-4 on the year after striking out four in 2.0 innings.
Â
"We self-imploded in the ninth and it's unfortunate," said head coach
Jason Gonzales. "We let the game get away from us."
Â
With two outs in the first, reigning Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week
Cline Andrews singled to center field and came around to score on
Larren Artis' RBI single to give the Javelinas a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Hogs and Hilltoppers matched zeros on the board as
Dustin Luna struck out two in two innings of work.
Trey Taylor followed with two punch outs in 2.0 innings and
Lance Elling tossed a scoreless frame.
Â
The Javelinas carried a 1-0 lead deep into the South Central Region bout until SEU tied the contest at 1-1 on a fielder's choice in the sixth. St. Edward's tacked on another run in the seventh to take a 2-1 lead but small ball continued to work for the Javelinas in the bottom inning as
Wesley Aguilar's squeeze play plated
David Massey, who reached on a leadoff single, to knot the game at 2-2. On the sacrifice, Aguilar reached on a fielder's choice and moved into scoring position on a bloop single by
Hayden Vesely. Batting cleanup for the first time in a Javelina uniform, freshman
Christian Caudle drove in the go-ahead run as Aguilar came around from second to give TAMUK a one-run lead heading into the final two innings.
Â
Caudle continues his torrid second half, as the freshman is coming off a weekend that featured his first game winning RBI single in an extra inning victory at Eastern New Mexico.
Â
Larren Artis finished 2-for-4 with an RBI in the loss and eight starters reached base safely.
Â
"We had to give guys an opportunity to play and we were able to get six pitchers and hitters work," said Gonzales.
Â
TAMUK heads to San Angelo, Texas for a three-game series versus Angelo State University on Friday, April 24. The Javelinas took three out of four in March from the Rams.
