KINGSVILLE, Texas – A tough task awaits the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team (0-24, 0-14 LSC) on Saturday when they travel to take on No. 24/17 Midwestern State (19-5, 10-4 LSC) in D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
The Mustangs have a 22-16 lead in the all-time series that dates back to the 1994-95 season. Seven of the last eight meetings have gone in their favor with the Javelinas last win coming on Feb. 22, 2014 by the score of 83-77 at home. In the first meeting this year, MSU won 66-53 as
Ruby Robertson and
Ashley Viera scored 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Sophomore
Micah Weaver leads the Blue and Gold with 11.4 ppg and 46.3 field goal percentage after a 20-point performance in which she made 10-of-15 shots. Second on the squad in scoring is
Lauren Jay at 9.4 points a contest. She has also grabbed a team-high 6.5 rpg and getting 1.3 spg.
Viera is dishing out 2.1 apg, the most on the squad, while
Tessa Ramirez is adding 1.9 apg.
Kyra Bauer is one of two players for TAMUK to starting every game this season (Jay). She contributed 5.2 ppg and 4.4 rpg.
The Mustangs are coming off a shocking two-point loss to Angelo State on Wednesday. Prior to that, they had won seven of their previous eight contests with their lone defeat during that time come at nationally ranked West Texas A&M. This year MSU is 11-2 when playing at home.
Andrea Carter and Diana Jones are the top two scoring options for the Mustangs at 13.3 and 13.2 ppg, respectively. Carter leads the Lone Star Conference with 9.6 rpg and is making 82.1 percent at the free throw line. Jones meanwhile comes in with 3.8 apg, 20 made three-pointers and has converted 105-of-134 charity stripe attempts.
Lisa Hampton is the squad's biggest threat from long distance, having made 57 treys and hitting 41.6 percent from that range.
Shambreaka Jones is contributing 7.0 ppg and 6.3 rpg while Shatoia Gober adds 9.3 ppg, 5.8 rpg and 1.8 spg.
