Game 17: @TAMUKWBB Begins Three-Game Homestand Saturday with Midwestern State

Javelinas looking to win second straight against the Mustangs


 
KINGSVILLE, Texas – Three consecutive home games are on tap for the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team (0-16, 0-6 LSC) beginning with Saturday's game against Midwestern State (14-3, 5-2 LSC). Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court with the game being sponsored by Mike Shaw Automotive.
 
The Mustangs hold a 21-16 edge in the all-time series with the Javelinas. Both squads won at home last year with the Blue and Gold's victory snapping a six-game winless streak to MSU.
 
In the past three games, Ashley Viera has come alive offensively with a team-best 12.7 ppg while nailing seven three-pointers. She is also recording 2.7 rpg and 2.0 apg in the span.
 
Micah Weaver paces TAMUK on the season in scoring at 11.2 ppg while shooting 46.0 percent from the field.
 
Lauren Jay enters with a team best 6.1 rpg, 20 steals and 12 blocks. She contributes 8.9 ppg and is one of two players on the team (Kyra Bauer) to have started every game this season.
 
MSU comes in having defeated Angelo State by eight on Wednesday to snap a two-game losing streak. In road games this year, the Mustangs are 3-1 with wins over Eastern New Mexico, Southern Nazarene and Texas Woman's while suffering their only defeat at Tarleton State.
 
Diana Jones is the top scorer on the ream with 14.1 ppg and dishes out a team-high 3.1 apg. Leading not only MSU but the Lone Star Conference as well in rebounding is Andrea Carter at 9.9 a contest. She adds 13.1 ppg and has made 83.2 percent of her free throws.
 
A threat from three-point range is Lisa Hampton, having nailed 39 this season and making 41.5 percent.
 
Defensively, Shambreka Jones paces the conference with 2.3 bpg and is second on the team in rebounding (6.4). Carter is credited with 1.8 spg while Shatoia Gober adds 1.7 a contest.
 
The Mustangs come in scoring 69.2 ppg, 10.3 more than their opponents. They also have a +6.2 rebounding margin while grabbing 39.2 per game. On the defensive end of the court, MSU is averaging 8.4 spg and a league-high 4.6 bpg.
