TALE OF THE TAPEColorado Mesa needed overtime to survive its season opener against Dixie State University, 44-37, after a ferocious 21-point third quarter by the Red Storm.
Â
Like Kingsville's
Anthony Washington, the Mavericks returned a kickoff for a touchdown, beginning the game with a bang as DJ Hubbard led off the season going 95 yards for the touchdown. Washington's 96-yard touchdown earned the senior Lone Star Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors, while Hubbard was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week after his run. Washington and Hubbard are two of just 13 players in NCAA Division II with kickoff returns for touchdowns.
Â
Sophomore Aric Kaiser went 21-of-40 and threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns in the opener to lead CMU's offense to 44 points. The team reached the red zone seven times and scored five times.
Â
THE BUCK STOPS HEREThe Javelinas look to put an end to a nine-game losing skid dating back to last season against a team they have never faced in Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks are led by third-year head coach Russ Martin, who has compiled a 10-13 mark since taking over the CMU football program.
Â
PITCH FASTÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Texas A&M-Kingsville's first touchdown of the 2014 season came off a quick forward pitch to
Jordan Thomas, who dove into the end zone for a 72-yard touchdown play. The touchdown was his first as a Javelina and
Trey Mitchell's first since transferring from Reedly College.
Â
MAKING A SWITCHSecond year head coach
David Calloway announced Monday that defensive backs
James Gilbert and
T.J. McCullough will be moved to running back and wide receiver, respectively. Gilbert will back up sophomore
Greg Pitre and junior
Shawn Vasquez, while McCullough plugs into the slot receiver role.
