Box Score KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville didn't want to wait any longer than it had to on Saturday to clinch the Javelinas first trip to Allen for the Lone Star Conference Championship as they opened the game with a 22-5 run and never looked back en route to a 83-67 win on Senior Day at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
Kingsville (11-15, 6-10) hit 64.5% from the floor in the first half building a 49-20 lead at the intermission as
Rita Banaszczak converted a fast-break basket. The Javelinas hit 6-of-6 attempts from 3-point range in the half and dominated on the glass 19-11. Kingsville forced 15 turnovers in the first half and outscored the Belles 22-8 off turnovers.
In the 22-5 run to take control, five different Javelinas scored including all three seniors playing their final home game. Seniors
Rosalie Cutri and Banaszczak each tallied four as did junior
Lauren Jay. The third senior,
Sheana Jones, and
Ashley Viera each knocked down threes in the run.
After Angelo (17-9, 7-7), which hit just 33.3% from the floor in the first half, trimmed the lead to 24-11 with just under nine minutes to go in the half on a layin by Leah Lemaire.
The Javelinas responded with a 16-9 spurt to close out the half ahead 49-20.
In the second half, Kingsville continued its hot shooting as the Javelinas hit 57.9% from the floor and built a 36-point lead just three minutes into the half.
With strong outside shooting especially by Amanda Weaver, the Belles made a late charge to cut the Javelina advantage to 15 points with 2:12 remaining. Weaver drained 6-of-10 treys in the second half as the visitors were 10-of-17 behind the arc in the second half.
With the large lead, Kingsville was able to go to its bench with all 13 players seeing action with 11 scoring. Jay led the way with 13 points, while Mahone, Banaszczak, and Cutri each had 12.
Weaver led the visitors with 23 points, while Haylee Oliver had 14 and Karli Kellermeier added 11.
The Javelinas will await the results of Saturday's evening games to see who and when they will play in the first round of the conference tournament next week in Allen.
