Play 4Kay Game Tips Off Busy Week For Javelinas

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team has a busy week ahead as the Javelinas begin the final homestretch of the season beginning with Wednesday's "Play 4Kay" contest against Texas Woman's at 6 p.m. on Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

The Play 4Kay game is part of a national campaign by the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association to fight women's cancer. The first 100 female fans will receive a pink t-shirt compliments of Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg. All fans who wear pink to the game will be given free admission to the contest.

The Javelinas enter the week with an 8-12 mark overall and are 3-7 in the Lone Star Conference. TWU is currently 7-4 overall and 12-9 in the league. On Thursday night, the Kingsville women will face A&M-Commerce at 6 p.m. in a game celebrating Black History Month. The Hoggies will close out the week on Saturday by travelling to Tarleton State for a 4:30 p.m. contest. TSU is tied with Texas Woman's at 7-4 in league play and 16-5 overall entering the week.

The Javelinas are coming off a 1-1 week in which they knocked off Eastern New Mexico in Portales on Wednesday winning 72-56. On Saturday, the Hoggies fell 81-70 to West Texas at home.

Lindsey Mahone leads the team in scoring with 12.6 points a game on year, while Ashley Viera is second at 10.6. Rosalie Cutri is at 9.5 points a contest, while Sheana Jones is at 9.5 in LSC play. Lauren Jay has been strong offensively in recent games with 38 points in the last three contests.

Defensively, the Hoggies continue to lead the LSC in steals per contest with 11.9 a game. The mark is currently 11th in the nation. Cutri is first in the league individually at 2.6 a game, which is 41st in the country. Mahone is third in the LSC at 2.3 a game.

TWU, which edged the Javelinas in Denton 72-69 earlier this season, is led by the duo of Rebekah Cluley and Ria Pateraki. Cluley averages 12.3 a game, Pateraki is scoring 10.7. She had 14 points and nine rebounds in the first meeting of the season.

Commerce, who is Kingsville's Thursday night opponent, was the Javelinas first LSC victim this season. The Hoggies won 76-72 on the road. Viera led the Javelinas with 18 points and seven assists, while Jay snagged seven rebounds.
The Lions are led by Breanna Harris who is third in the LSC with 15.4 points, second in rebounding (10.4), second field-goal percentage (57.2) and second in double-doubles with nine. Devin Harris is second in scoring at 11 points a game.

Tarleton State, which won in South Texas 80-61, is led by Kiara Wright. Wright is first nationally in shooting at 64% and third in double-doubles with 15. She is second in the nation with 12.5 rebounds a contest, while 14th in scoring with 21.5 ppg. Brianna Bledsoe is second on the team with 12.6 points, while Kathy Thomas is netting 10.6. Shanae Lowrance leads the conference in blocks.
