Softball Falls 6-2 In Season Opener to Savage Storm

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team allowed three runs in each of the first and second innings Saturday and was unable to comeback as it dropped a 6-2 decision to Southeastern Oklahoma State at the St. Mary's Classic.

Of the six runs allowed by the Javelinas, four came with two outs in an inning. In the first, Laramie Beal drove in a pair of runs with a two-out single, while Hayley Strawn had a 2-run double in the second.

All six of the runs were credited to Kat Tapley who pitched 1-2/3 innings in her Javelina debut with four walks and five hits allowed. She was relieved by Ariel Kellogg who tossed 4-1/3 innings of scoreless softball. She scattered three hits, while striking out two and walking one.

Southeastern's Shayna Milam held the Hoggies at bay until the seventh inning. Adela Gomez and Lindsey May, who had two of the team's four hits, opened the inning with back-to-back singles off Milam. Carynn Gonzales drew a walk to load the bases with no outs.

Gomez scored on a groundout by Corinne Brassell to the pitcher, while pinch runner Erica Graham scored on a groundout by Taylor McGill.

Milam earned the win tossing six innings. She allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Jacee Bennett ended the Kingsville threat by retiring all three batters she faced.

The Javelinas have two more games in the tournament on Sunday. They face UTPB at 10 a.m. before taking on East Central at noon.
