Box Score 2 LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team was 1-1 Saturday on the final day of the Chap Classic hosted by Lubbock Christian.
After a pair of heartbreaking losses on Friday, the Javelinas opened with a 5-set win over Texas-Permian Basin –25-22, 15-25, 25-23, 21-25, and 15-13. They lost in three to Texas A&M International in their final match.
In the win, three Javelinas finished with double-digit kills.
Stephanie Johns finished with 18 kills, while
Dedra Brown and
Kelsey Washington had 15 apiece. Washington added 23 digs.
Brittany Gutierrez led Kingsville with 27 kills.
Four UTPB players had double-digit kills. Keeley Brogdon and Melissa Lusk each had 12, while Terra Pell and Taylor Harmon each put down 10.
UTPB hit .210 in the match and Kingsville hit .206.
In the decisive fifth set, the match was not decided until a pair of kills by John to break a 13-all tie.
In the final match of the day, the Javelinas lost 25-21, 25-22, and 25-16 to International. Washington and Brown had 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Washington had a double-double with 10 digs.
Kingsville opens Lone Star Conference play with a trip to Eastern New Mexico on Friday. They face West Texas A&M on Saturday as well as Southwestern Oklahoma State in a non-conference match.
