Javelinas Can't Get Last Second Shots To Fall In 52-51 Defeat

Box Score KINGSVILLE, Texas – After falling behind by as many 11 points in the final 10 minutes Saturday night, the Texas A&M Kingsville men's basketball team held St. Mary's scoreless in the final 4:49 to get back in the game but missed a pair of jumpers in the final six seconds to drop a 52-51 decision at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

The Javelinas (3-6), who trailed by as many as 11 in the second half, trailed by nine points, 52-43, with just under five minutes remaining in the game as Justin Alexander scored on a layup.

St. Mary's moved to 7-1 with the win.

Irvin Hollinger then helped spark a Javelina run. Hollinger scored all four of his points in a 20-second span. He hit a pair of free throws to start the run and then turned a Marvin Binney offensive foul into a basket on the other end.

Neither side scored again until Robert Powell's second-chance basket with 1:18 remaining.

After blocking a shot on defense, Basey converted a pair of foul shots with 51 seconds left to make it a 1-point game 52-51 with 51 seconds left.

Each team had one final possession. Marvin Whitt took a shot with 21 seconds left but missed with Basey grabbing the board. Basey kept possession and waited until the clock got under 10 seconds before driving to the hoop. He pulled up for a short jumper but missed. The rebound made its way to Hollinger whose jumper as time expired was off target.

Except for a brief span around the 15-minute mark of the first half, the Javelinas led the first 20-minutes. Using a methodical offense, Kingsville controlled the tempo by hitting 50% from the floor and turning the ball over just twice in the first half. Defensively, Kingsville held the Rattlers to just 40% from the floor, while forcing nine turnovers.

An 8-2 run by Kingsville capped the first half. Basey drained the team's third 3-point basket of the half with 22 seconds left for a 30-21 lead.

In the second half, Basey hit a jumper to give the hosts an early 32-21 lead with 18:14 left.

However, things quickly began to go downhill as the Hoggies went cold from the field. Over the next 11 minutes, St. Mary's rattled off a 29-7 run to turn an 11-point deficit into an 11-point lead at 50-39 with seven minutes left in the game.

The Rattlers drained three, 3-point baskets and had an old-fashioned 3-point play in the run.
Basey and Adonis Bailey led the Javelinas with 16 and 10 points, respectively. Hollinger had seven rebounds in the contest as Kingsville won the war on the glass for the fourth time this season 31-38. It was the first time they did not win a game when having the rebounding edge. The Javelinas won the turnover battle forcing 20 and committing only 12.

Marvin Whitt, who had four of St. Mary's 3-point buckets, led the way with 14 points for the Rattlers..
