Box Score KINGSVILLE – The Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team led Wednesday night's non-conference finale by double digits most of the night but had to hold off a late Texas Lutheran charge for a 75-71 win at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
The Javelinas led by 13, 72-59, following a
Rashad Basey jumper with four minutes left but managed just three points the remainder of the game. Their lead was nine points with less than a minute to go after a
Robert Powell dunk.
After the dunk, TLU sandwiched a pair of threes by Garrett Wilkins and Joseph Richardson around a
Jordan Jahr free throw to make it a 75-71 contest with four seconds left.
With the win, Kingsville heads into the conference portion of its schedule following the holiday break with a 5-7 mark. TLU falls to 5-3.
The Javelinas led throughout the first half save for a 1-minute stretch around the 8-minute mark as former Kingsville player Donte McGee hit 1-of-2 foul shots for a 23-22 TLU lead.
The advantage didn't last long as Jahr's 3-point bucket ignited a 20-5 run.
Adonis Bailey had a dunk on the break during the spurt and Basey had eight points during the stretch.
Kingsville would have taken double-digit lead into the locker room but after an offensive foul provided TLU a final possession and Kendall Holmes drained a long three at the buzzer.
The Hoggies shot 53.8% from the floor in the opening half and outrebounded the Bulldogs 23-11.
In the second half, Kingsville pushed its lead to 20, 59-39, with 13 minutes left after opening the half with an 18-6 run.
The lead remained double figures until Joseph Richardson scored a second-chance basket for TLU with 2:33 left to make the score 72-63.
Basey continued to power the Javelina offense as he posted 23 points to lead all players. It was his sixth 20-point game of the season.
Adonis Bailey added 13 points and
Robert Powell came off the bench for 10.
Ronald Scott came off the bench to record a season-high eight assists and four steals.
The Javelinas, who shot 49.2% in the game, won the rebounding war easily. They just missed doubling up the visitors as they posted a season-best 47 rebounds to TLU's 24. Basey and Jahr led Kingsville with eight boards apiece.
Kingsville however did have a season-high in turnovers with 23, while the Bulldogs had just 13 and outscored the Hoggies 27-14 off the miscues.
Wilkins led the visitors with 15 points and six steals. Thomas Verm came off the bench for 12, while Robert Watson, Jr. had 10.
