Javelina Rally Comes Up Just Short At Southern Arkansas

Box Score MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team made a fierce comeback attempt from 20 points down Tuesday night but Ashley Viera's 3-point basket in the final seconds was no good as the Javelinas fell 75-73 to Southern Arkansas.

The loss dropped the Javelinas record to 5-4 on the season as they head into their final non-conference game of the year on Thursday at Arkansas-Monticello at 5:30 p.m. The Muleriders improved to 6-3.

After Lindsey Mahone scored on a drive to the hoop to start the second half, Southern Arkansas's Allie Wade helped ignite a 21-4 run as the hosts took a 67-47 advantage just over five minutes into the second half. Wade, who led all players in the game with 23 points, scored 14 points in the run knocking down four treys in the spurt.

The Javelinas, who have lost their four games by a total of 16 points, refused to give in to the Muleriders. Ruby Robertson keyed an 8-0 run just past the midway point of the second half with six points as Kingsville made it an 8-point contest at the 8:04 mark.

Rita Banaszczak pulled Kingsville within four points with 4:26 left as she converted a 3-point play. After a foul shot by Demmee Rodriguez, Lauren Jay's jumper against her former team capped an 18-3 run for the Hoggies. The bucket made it a 74-73 contest with 1:36 left.

Despite turning the ball over twice with a chance to take the lead, Kingsville had one last chance. After Wade made 1-of-2 foul shots with 26 seconds left for a 75-73 lead, Jay grabbed the rebound on the miss.

The Javelinas ran the clock down to five seconds looking for a last shot but Viera's three was off target and Mariam Ridgwell grabbed the rebound for the Muleriders.

Mahone led the Javelinas with 17 points and seven rebounds. Robertson added 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while Viera had 11 points including three treys. Aside from Wade's game-high 23, Ridgwell had 19 points and Stevi Cooper netted 15 to lead SAU.
