COMMERCE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team picked up its third-straight win with a marathon victory in five sets over Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday Afternoon. The Javelinas won 16-25, 27-25, 23-25, 25-17, and 19-17.
With their second-straight Lone Star Conference win in five sets, the Javelinas moved to 10-8 on the year and evened their conference mark at 3-3. The Lions fell to 11-3 overall and 2-2 in the LSC.
In the decisive fifth set neither side managed much of an advantage. The sides traded the lead seven times and were tied 15 times. Both were numbers were larger than the first four sets combined.
The Javelinas fought off three match points at 15-14, 16-15 and 17- 16 before winning with the game's final three points. Dedra Brown tied the match at 17 with a kill, while Shae Smith gave the team a 1-point advantage with a kill. The Hoggies won on an attack error by Taryn Driver on match point.
Four Javelinas finished the match double-digit kills. Kelsey Washington led the way with 18 kills and a season-best 25 digs. Brown added 15 kills, while Stephanie Johns and Smith had 13 and 10, respectively. Aside from Washington, three other Javelinas had double-digit digs. Giselle Carreon had 17, Sarah Fountain 12, and Mariah Carlin 11. Fountain had 44 assists.
At the net, Kingsville finished with 11 blocks. Stephanie Johns had 3.5 blocks, while Kayla McGlathery and Smith combined for six.
Amy Davault led Commerce with 17 kills and shared top honors with Jordan Neal with 16 digs. Neal had 59 assists.
Kingsville returns home to host the annual Corpus Christi Spohn Hospital Kleberg Dig Pink game on Tuesday at 7 p.m. They will face Incarnate Word at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
