KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team saw its 7-game winning streak come to a halt in the second game of a doubleheader with visiting Lone Star Conference rival Cameron. The Javelinas won the first game, 11-3, but dropped the second game, 7-4.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Javelinas (21-8, 9-5) spotted the Aggies (17-18, 6-8) a pair of runs in the first inning, but responded with five in the bottom of the first inning and quickly built a 10-2 lead en route to an 11-3 win.
Jaden Dillon (Bridge City/Bridge City HS) improved to 6-0 on the season for the Javelinas. He went 5.0 innings allowing eight hits and two runs while striking out nine without a walk. Ryan Benitez (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) closed out the game pitching the final two innings.
The Hoggie offense cranked out 15 hits with Trent Wagner (Victoria/Memorial HS) leading the way going 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI’s, a double and a stolen base. Cameron Dullnig (San Antonio/Clark HS) was also 3-for-3 with three runs batted in. Ben Villafuerte (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) and Dustin Aguilar (San Antonio/MacArthur HS) each had two base hits.
Justin Watley took the loss for the Aggies lasting only 1.2 innings. Benshell Garcia went 2-for-4 with two RBI’s and Kevin Lum cracked a solo home run to lead the offense.
Once again, the Aggies scored two quick runs in the top of the first inning. Andrew Garcia had an RBI double and Brad Blumer drove in a run with a single after the inning was kept alive by an error.
The Javelinas responded with an unearned run in the bottom of the first and took the lead in the third inning when they plated two runners.
James Wallace (Corpus Christi/Tuloso-Midway HS) and Dullnig each had run-scoring singles in the inning.
Both teams scored a run in the fifth inning and then the game shifted in the top of the seventh inning. Two hit batsmen, two hits and three errors allowed the visitors to score four times to take a 7-4 lead.
Cameron’s James Rhodes was an iron man on the mound tossing 8.0 innings and throwing 150 pitches to get the win. He allowed 13 hits, two earned runs and four walks while striking out seven. Aaron Kleekamp retired the final three batters of the game to earn the save. Blumer led the offense with a 4-for-4 game at the plate and drove in three runs.
Adam Aspaas (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills HS) was stuck with a no-decision despite pitching six strong innings for the Javelinas. He allowed six hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out three. Adrian De La Garza (Pearland/Dobie HS) was handed the loss. Denver Diefenbach (Victoria/St. Joseph’s HS) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief for the team.
Dullnig and Jake Mendiola (Kingsville/Richland Northeast HS) each had three hits for the Hoggies while Ben Villafuerte (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) had two hits and scored two runs.
The two teams hook up again on Friday at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader.
