
ABILENE, TEXAS – Adam Aspaas (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills HS) tossed his second shutout of the season in an 11-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader at Abilene Christian. The Wildcats came back and won the second game, 1-0 in eight innings.
Aspaas scattered five hits and one walk to improve to 5-1 on the season for the Javelinas (14-7, 3-4) who scored a season high in runs. The Hoggies scored three times in the first inning, five times in the third and three more in the fourth.
James Wallace (Corpus Christi/Tuloso-Midway HS) smacked a key three-run triple in the third inning to put the game out of reach.
The Javelinas pounded out 10 hits in the game. Jake Mendiola (Kingsville/Richland Northeast HS) went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI’s while Taylor Taska (Kingwood/Kingwood HS) and Trent Wagner (Victoria/Memorial HS) were each 1-for-2 with a double, two runs and an RBI.
Jordan Herrera was tagged with the loss for the Wildcats after allowing eight runs in three innings. Duncan Blades and Chuck Duarte each had two hits in the game.
In the second game the two teams traded zeros for the seven innings of regulation. Austin Palmer allowed four hits and three walks while striking out three for the Wildcats in seven innings. Dallas Ponder (Flatonia/Flatonia HS) allowed four hits and two walks while striking out two in 5.1 innings for the Javelinas.
Both teams had chances to score in the first seven innings. Wagner threw out Travis Schuetze at home in the third inning to preserve the shutout. The Javelinas put runners in scoring position in six of eight innings, but were never able to get the key hit.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Cameron Dullnig (San Antonio/Clark HS) retired the first two Wildcats, but then Kyle Conwell singled and Rodge Macy reached on an error. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Duarte came through with an infield single to win the game. Clint Cooper was credited with the win after pitching a scoreless inning of relief.
The two teams finish up their four-game series on Sunday with one game at 1:35 p.m.
