Brown Sets Two Records in Win

COMMERCE, TEXAS – Texas A&M-Kingsville junior guard Ashton Brown (Randolph, NY/Central HS) set two school records in the team’s 76-65 victory at Lone Star Conference rival A&M-Commerce on Monday night.

Brown led the Javelinas (10-13, 5-9) with 25 points while knocking down all 13 of his free throw attempts. It broke the school record of 12-for-12 in a single game and also gave him 41 consecutive free throws made, breaking his own school record of 37 that he set earlier in the year.

The Javelinas and Lions (7-15, 2-12) met two days ago in a triple overtime thriller that the Hoggies won, 104-94. This time around the Javelinas were able to win the game in regulation although there was a 30-minute delay when Lion guard LaBree Sledge suffered an injury with 4:45 remaining in the game that required extra medical attention.

The Javelinas took a nine-point lead into halftime and quickly extended it to 13 points. However, the Lions responded with a 9-2 run and eventually closed to within four points with 10:15 left in the game. The Hoggies responded with a 9-0 run and never led by fewer than eight points the rest of the game. The Javs were able to put the game away at the foul line making 10-of-12 in the final two minutes.

The Javelinas shot 39.7 percent from the field, made 5-of-20 from three-point range and made 25-of-30 from the foul line. In addition to Brown, Robert Williams (Dallas/Kimball HS) came off the bench to contribute 16 points and 13 rebounds in 18 minutes. Ryan Layssard (Opelousas, LA/Opelousas HS) added 16 points and went 6-of-7 from the foul line. Derryl Nash (Austin/Elgin HS) came off the bench to score 10 points and had two steals. The team had 34 rebounds and committed 14 turnovers.

The Lions shot 44.2 percent from the field, made 5-for-19 from the three-point line and went 14-of-20 from the foul line. LSC Preseason Player of the Year Desmond King led the team with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Devondrick Walker and Brad Hambrick each scored 11 points while Sledge led all players with six assists and three steals. They had 37 rebounds and committed 20 turnovers in the game.

The Javelinas are back in action on Thursday at home against Cameron at 8 p.m.
