Top Ranked TexAnns Run Past Javs

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS – Tarleton State, the first place team in the Lone Star Conference, put their unblemished conference mark on the line Wednesday night at Wisdom Gymnasium and came away with a 102-76 victory over visiting Texas A&M-Kingsville in women’s basketball action.

The TexAnns (16-5, 13-0) came into the game on a 13-game winning streak and did not have much trouble with the Javelinas (4-15, 3-10). Tarleton put together a 16-2 first half run and topped it with an 18-0 second half run to prevent the visitors from putting up a challenge.

The Javelinas received a season high in points from seniors Amanda Haven (Calallen/Calallen HS) and Kelly Bastow (Bunbury, Australia/Bunbury Catholic), but it was not enough. The team shot 37.3 percent from the field, made 7-of-21 three-point attempts and was 19-for-26 at the foul line. Haven led the team with 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field, including a 3-of-6 performance from three-point range. She added five rebounds, including four on the offensive end. Bastow went 4-of-11 from three-point range to finish with 12 points before fouling out. Inekka Stevenson (Freeport/Brazosport HS) added 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Freshman Ashley Benavides (Olmito/Los Fresnos HS) added eight points and four rebounds in just 15 minutes of action. The Hoggies pulled down one more rebound than the TexAnns and committed 17 turnovers.

The TexAnns shot 53.1 percent from the field en route to a season high in points. They knocked down 11-of-24 from three-point range and were 23-of-36 at the charity stripe. Peyton Adamson led all scorers with 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field, 4-of-8 from three-point range and a perfect 6-for-6 at the foul line. Her sister, Shelby, racked up 13 points, 12 assists and three steals without committing a turnover. Shanae Lowrance had 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field while Morgan Stehling had 12 points off the bench. Kiara Wright led the team with 10 rebounds and added eight points. They had 26 assists in all while committing 11 turnovers.

The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday at home against Texas A&M-Commerce at 1 p.m.
