Late Run Comes Up Shy For Javelinas

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville made multiple runs at the Texas Woman’s on Saturday in Lone Star Conference action, but were unable to get over the proverbial hump falling 70-66 on Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

Down 13, 63-50, with 2:14 left, the Javelinas (3-4, 1-2) made a final run the TWU (3-6, 1-2).

Kaitlyn Lowen, who finished with her third double-double with 10 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, grabbed a rebound and scored in the paint. The put-back started a 16-5 run that was capped by a Mardara Gulbe 3-point basket with 13 seconds left that made it a 2-point game, 68-66.

The Javelinas hit three of their eight treys during the run as Gulbe had two and Breanna Gonzalez had one. Lowen converted an old-fashioned, 3-point play in the run with a lay in and foul shot after a steal to make it 67-62 with 27 seconds left.

Gulbe stole the ensuing inbounds pass and was fouled going to the basket. She made 1-of-2 foul shots with 22 second left to make it a 4-point game.

Rebecca Cluley, who hit a pair of foul shots with 41 seconds left, pushed the Pioneers’ lead to 68-63 by hitting 1-of-2 foul shots with 18 seconds remaining.

Gulbe answered with a three to make 68-66 with 13 seconds left.

Barbara-Scott Kolb then connected on two attempts from the foul with 10 seconds left after being fouled in the backcourt.

The Hoggies turned the ball over on the ensuing possession ending their comeback attempt.

Aside from Gulbe’s career-best 16 points, Lowen and Ashley Viera each had 10 points as 10 Javelinas scored. Ashley Benavides snared eight first-half caroms as Kingsville out-rebounded TWU 46-42 – 23 to 14 on the offensive glass.

The Pioneers out-shot Kingsville 40.7% to 30.4% from the floor and were 20-of-25 from the line. The Javelinas were 16-of-23 from the charity stripe.

Led by Rachel Schlosser with 16 the visitors had four players in double figures. Ria Pateraki had a double-double with 13 points and 13 boards. Cluley and Taylor Swift each added 11 for the visitors, who had seven players in uniform.

Kingsville fell behind by 11 early in the first half hitting just three of their first 15 shots as the visitors took an 18-7 lead on a Schlosser bucket six minutes into the game.

The Javelinas battled back with a 13-2 run to knot the game at 20 on a 3-point basket by Gulbe with 8:11 remaining in the half.

Kingsville took advantage of solid foul shooting in the run, as Gulbe, who had seven points in the spurt, was 4-of-4 from the line and the team 6-of-6 as a team.

The Pioneers attempted to pull away again with a 6-0 run to take a 28-22 advantage with four points coming from Schlosser.

Five-straight points from Viera including a three off a cross-court pass from Ashley Benavides pulled the Javelinas to within one, 28-27 with just over two minutes to go in the half.

The Javelinas turned the ball over three times in the final two minutes, while TWU’s Mary Kovtun made it 30-27 with 23 seconds left in the half.

The Javelinas next face St. Edward’s on Sunday at 1 p.m.
