The Rattlers (35-8) got off to a good start in the game. Tyler Migl hit a two-run homer in the top of the first inning and Billy Richard cracked a solo home run in the third inning. They added two more runs in the fourth inning and appeared to be running away with the game, but the Javelina (19-21) relief corp blanked the Rattlers over the next five innings and did not allow a hit in 6.0 innings of work.
The Javelinas got on the board in the fifth inning. Trent Wagner (Victoria/Memorial HS) tripled in a run and then scored on Ryan Cook’s (Houston/Mayde Creek HS) single. They would add another run when Brian Frazier (Kingwood/Kingwood HS) walked with the bases loaded.
The Javelinas put runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, but could not push a run across. In the bottom of the ninth, the Rattlers brought in relief pitcher Sammy Rivas who has not allowed a run in 29.0 innings this year. The Hoggies put the first two runners on base and loaded the bases with two outs before Rivas was able to close out the game for his 10th save of the year.
The Javelinas out hit the Rattlers, 9-8, in the game. Cook was the only player on the team with two hits as he went 2-for-4 with a run, RBI, walk and a stolen base. Adam Aspaas (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills HS) started the game on the mound and was handed the loss. Ian Jones (Round Rock/McNeil HS) pitched outstanding in relief going 4.0 innings allowing just a walk while striking out three.
Kyle Bumpas earned the win for the Rattlers after pitching 1.2 shutout innings of relief.
The Javelinas are back in action on Thursday at Texas A&M-International for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
