Tale of Two Games for Javs

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team showed a few nerves in their first game of the season committing seven errors en route to a 10-6 loss against UH-Victoria, but they bounced back with an 8-2 victory in the second game without committing an error at Nolan Ryan Field on Tuesday night. (Game 1, Game 2)

The Jaguars (2-4) jumped all over the Javelinas (1-1) in the first inning of the first game. They scored six runs on four hits and three errors to take a lead they would not relinquish. The Jags extended the lead to 8-0 in the fourth inning thanks to another error that led to a fourth unearned run in the game.

The Javelinas made the score a little better by scoring single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth innings and then tacking on two more in the ninth inning. David de Leon (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) was handed the loss after lasting just one inning. John Touchton pitched 5.0 innings allowing three hits, two runs and three walks to pick up his first win of the season.

The Jaguars pounded out 13 hits. John Longoria led the team with three hits, three RBI’s, two runs, a double and a triple. David Baker and Brandon Bohanon each scored a run and drove in two runs.

The Javelinas finished with nine hits in the game, including four doubles. Cody Stigall (Seguin/Seguin HS) went 3-for-4 with two runs, two stolen bases, a double, RBI and hit by pitch to lead the offense. Cash Barker (Spring/Klein HS) added a pair of base hits and two RBI’s while Ryan Cook (Houston/Mayde Creek HS) had two hits and two runs scored. Clay Stephens (Houston/Bellaire HS), Nathan Humpal (Corpus Christi/John Paul II HS) and Jonathon Escobar (Edinburg/Edinburg North HS) each pitched well in relief for the team.

In the second game, the Javelinas scored six runs in the third inning, all with two outs and all unearned to break open a 0-0 game. They added two more runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-0 lead.

The Jaguars finally got on the board in the fifth inning with a pair of runs, but that was all they could manage. Adam Aspaas (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills HS) picked up the win for the Hoggies by pitching 2.0 innings allowing just one hit while striking out three batters. Tim Jones (Lake Jackson/Brazoswood HS) started the game and pitched 2.0 shutout innings, but did not figure in on the decision.

The Javelinas managed only six hits, but made them timely. Kris Guerrero (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) went 2-for-2 with two runs and a walk to lead the offense. Cook walked twice, stole a base and scored two runs. No other player had more than one hit, one RBI or one run in the game.

The end of the Javelina bullpen proved to be strong. Setup man Clint Brown (Red Oak/Red Oak HS) pitched a perfect sixth inning with two strikeouts. Closer Jeremy Flores (Victoria/Memorial HS) pitched the seventh inning and was impressive with four strikeouts after a batter reached on a passed ball. He did not walk a batter or allow a batter to hit the ball in fair territory.

Victoria’s Cory Carter was tagged with the loss after allowing five hits, six unearned runs and three walks in 3.0 innings.

The Javelinas are back in action on Friday at 2 p.m. at Lone Star Conference rival Southeastern Oklahoma.
