Hogs Rally for Split

LAWTON, OKLAHOMA – Travis Earles (Houston/Cy-Falls HS) and Clay Stephens (Houston/Bellaire HS) played the hero roles on Friday afternoon as the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team split a pair of games at Lone Star Conference rival Cameron University. They lost the first game, 15-7 and won the second, 9-8.  (Game 1, Game 2)

After losing the first game, the Javelinas (20-18, 16-14) appeared to be en route to getting swept by the Aggies (20-12, 19-9). The Aggies led 8-4 heading into the seventh inning before the Hoggies mounted their comeback.

First, the Javelinas scored two runs in the seventh thanks to a two-run single by Ben Villafuerte (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS). Then, Earles gave the Javelinas the lead with one swing of the bat when he hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning. Stephens made the lead stand up as he shut down the Aggies over the final three innings allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out three to earn his fifth win of the season.

The Hoggies finished the game with 15 hits as Earles led the way going 3-for-5 with a home run, triple and a stolen base. Villafuerte added two base hits and three RBI’s. Brandon Rohr (Anaheim, CA/Orange Lutheran HS) went 2-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base. Dan Rogers pitched the first six innings of the game striking out seven in the no-decision.

The first game was all Cameron as they scored seven runs in the first inning and then added three in the second and four in the fifth before settling for a 15-7 win. Six of the nine batters in the lineup had at least two hits and every player had at least one hit. Powell went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s, three runs and a home run while both Lyons and Azzopardi each drove in three runs.

Rohr had a big game for the Javelinas going 2-for-3 with two RBI’s, two runs, a double and a home run. Adrian Williams (Victoria/Memorial HS) hit a solo home run and went 4-for-7 in the doubleheader. Trent Wagner (Victoria/Memorial HS) went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and two runs.
