Javelinas Knock off #25 TexAnns

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – On Saturday night at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court two of the best women’s basketball teams in the Lone Star Conference locked horns.  Each team had their opportunities to win the game, but in the end it was a pair of Kayla Naylor (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) free throws with 3.3 seconds remaining that gave Texas A&M-Kingsville a 63-62 win over visiting #25 Tarleton State.  (box score)

The win for the Javelinas (16-4, 4-1) was very nearly a heart-breaking loss.  The Hoggies led for the majority of the game, but struggled down the stretch.  After taking a 54-49 lead with 4:49 remaining on a Reagan Sutton (Portland/Pusch Ridge Christian HS) lay-up, the Javelinas did score for nearly three minutes.

The TexAnns (16-4, 3-2) went on a 9-0 run and held a 58-54 lead after a three-pointer by Sonya Sundberg, who had been 0-for-8 from the floor prior to the shot.  Defensively, they forced three turnovers during the run.

The Javelinas finally scored a point on a free throw with 59 seconds left to cut it to a three-point game and decided to extend the game by fouling and putting the Tex Anns on the line.  The TexAnns calmly made four straight free throws, but each time the Hoggies answered with an Angela Franklin (Vacaville, CA/Vanden HS) bucket.  The Javs still trailed by three points with 39 seconds left when TSU finally missed the front end of a 1-and-1.

The Javelinas pulled to within one point after Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS) scored on a put back with 24 seconds left.  The Hogs full court press then forced a turnover giving the ball back with 20 seconds left and a chance to win the game.

The Javelinas went to Franklin again, but this time her shot did not fall.  In the ensuing scramble for the rebound the referees ruled a jump ball.  The possession arrow favored the TexAnns with 7.9 seconds remaining.

The Hoggie defense came through again as they forced another turnover to get the ball back with 5.1 seconds left.  The ball went in to Naylor and she was fouled as she drove to the basket.  She rattled home the first free throw to tie the game and then after a TSU timeout, she calmly drained the second free throw.
The TexAnns were able to get an open look at a potential game-winning shot from 26-feet out, but it was off the mark.

The Javelinas shot just 32.7 percent from the field against the top ranked defense in the Lone Star Conference, but went 21-for-26 at the foul line and 6-for-17 from three-point range.  Soza led the team with 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals.  Sutton and Ursula Hill (Cypress/Cy-Falls HS) each had 11 points and Naylor finished with 10 points and four assists.

The normally turnover free Javelinas committed 20 miscues in the game, but forced the TexAnns into 21 turnovers.  The Hogs also grabbed six more rebounds than TSU.

The TexAnns shot 38.9 percent from the field, made 5-of-17 three-point attempts and were 15-for-21 at the foul line.  Shedera Bowman led the team with 11 points and five rebounds off the bench.  Shelby Adamson added nine points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.  Brittnie Haley chipped in the 10 points and three steals.

The Javelinas are back in action on Tuesday night at 5:30 at LSC South rival Abilene Christian.
