Hoggies Too Tough for Belles

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Playing in front of the largest crowd of the season at IBC Bank “Pack the House” Night, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team remained perfect at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court with an 82-65 win over Lone Star Conference South Division rival Angelo State on Wednesday night in front of 1,215 fans.  (box score)

In the first half, the Javelinas (14-4, 2-1) used an outstanding defensive effort to gain control of the game.  The ‘Belles (8-9, 1-2) were hanging around and pulled into a 20-20 tie with the Hoggies after two free throws by Alix Flores with 7:16 left in the half.  The Javelinas then closed the half on a 15-2 run to take a 35-22 into the break.  They limited ASU to just 23.1 percent shooting from the floor.

At the beginning of the second half, Javelina senior guard Dyana Bullinger (Spring/Klein HS) drained a trifecta of three-pointers in the first seven minutes.  Her third three-pointer gave the Hoggies a 55-35 lead with 13:17 to play.

The ‘Belles quickly closed the gap as they went on a 14-2 run over a 4:50 stretch.  ASU was able to keep the deficit to single digits thanks to Camille Perkins who went 9-for-12 from the foul line over a 3:10 span.  Perkins had a chance to make it a five point game with three and a half minutes left in the game, but her three-pointer did not fall and the Javelinas closed out the game on a 15-6 run.

Hoggie senior guard Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS) played a major role in the team’s win as she hit three three-pointers in the final six minutes of the game.  The first two prevented the ‘Belles from making the game a nail biter and her last one put the finishing touches on the win.

All five Javelina starters scored at least 10 points in the game as Bullinger led the way with her second straight double-double.  She tied her career high with 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including four three-pointers, and grabbed a team high 10 boards.  Soza tallied 18 points and grabbed five rebounds as she went 4-for-5 from three-point range.  Rochelle Ikeni (Fresno, CA/Roosevelt HS) and Angela Franklin (Vacaville, CA/Vanden HS) each added 11 points while Kayla Naylor (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) added 10 points as she went 8-for-8 from the foul line.

The Hoggies shot 46.6 percent from the field, made 9-of-23 three-pointers and were 19-for-24 from the foul line.  They also grabbed eight more rebounds than the visitors and committed four fewer turnovers.

The ‘Belles were led by Perkins’ 16 points while Leah LeMaire had 11 points.  Casie Adams came off the bench to contribute eight points, 11 rebounds and five assists.  The team shot 36.5 percent from the field, made 5-of-13 three-pointers and went 22-of-27 at the foul line.

The Javelinas are off this weekend and do not return to the floor until next Wednesday at 6 o’clock at Midwestern State.
