Javs Can't Complete Comeback

Philip Johnson hit a home run on Tuesday night  LAREDO, TEXAS – A six-run inning by Texas A&M International proved to be too much for the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team to overcome as they lost 8-7 in 10 innings on Tuesday afternoon at Dustdevil Field.  (box score)

The Javelinas (17-24) took advantage of a first inning error to jump out to a 3-0 lead.  The Dustdevils (15-23) scored one run in the bottom half of the inning and then exploded in the fifth inning.

In the fifth inning, the Dustdevils sent 12 batters to the plate.  They loaded the bases with two outs and then Ryan Flynn stroked a two-run single to get the offense rolling.  From that point on the merry-go-round started as the Javs walked four of the next five batters before finally getting the last out of the inning.

Trailing 7-3, the Hoggies did not give up.  Philip Johnson (Malibu, CA/Malibu HS) hit a solo home run in the sixth inning.  In the eighth inning, he drove in another run with a single and the team added another run thanks to another error.  In the ninth inning, Travis Earles (Houston/Cy-Falls HS) stroked a double to lead off the inning.  Tim Hanan (Groves/Port Neches-Groves HS) pinch ran and eventually came around to score the tying run on a ground out by Adrian Williams (Victoria/Memorial HS).

The Dustdevils won the game in the bottom of the 10th inning.  With two outs and a runner on first base, Rey Alvarez singled, Carlos Flores walked to load the bases and then Flynn was walked to force in a run and end the game.

The Javelinas had 11 hits in the game as Johnson, Thomas Miller (Las Vegas, NV/Sierra Vista HS) and Brandon Rohr (Anaheim, CA/Orange Lutheran HS) each had two hits in the ball game.  Steven Hooker (Houston/Spring Woods HS) was tagged with the loss despite allowing just one run in 5.0 innings of work.

The Dustdevils were led by Alvarez who had three hits and Flynn who had four runs batted in.  Enrique Granados also added a pair of singles.  James Santillan pitched 7.0 innings allowing eight hits, four runs and three walks while striking out four in a no-decision.  John Gonzales picked up the win after pitching 2.1 innings in relief.

The Javs are back in action on Friday against #12 Cameron University at 3 o’clock at Nolan Ryan Field.
