Strickland Shuts Down Texans

Sam Strickland struck out 11 batters on Friday  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Behind the solid pitching of senior left hander Sam Strickland (Houston/Spring Woods HS), the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team took the first game of a four game series from Lone Star Conference rival Tarleton State, 2-1.  (box score)

Strickland had things rolling from the outset and also did an excellent job with runners in scoring position.  In the second inning, the Texans (17-19-1, 13-14-1) loaded the bases with two outs, but he was able to get a strike out to end the inning.  In the top of the fourth inning, the Texans threatened again by putting runners on second and third with no outs.  Strickland calmly struck out the next two batters and got the third on a ground out.

The Javelinas (15-22, 11-18) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning.  With two outs, A.J. Hecker (Orange/Bridge City HS) drove in a run with a double to left field.  Adrian Williams (Victoria/Memorial HS), who walked earlier in the inning, scored the second run when he slid across the plate following a wild pitch.

The Texans finally got on the board in the fifth inning when Keith Peacock doubled home Aaron Dalton with two outs.  TSU threatened again in the seventh inning when Andrew Wolfe doubled with one out, but Strickland struck out the final two batters of the game to earn his fourth win of the season.

Strickland scattered five hits and walked one batter while striking out 11 for the Javelinas.  His counterpart on the Texans, Austin Neal, also scattered five hits and walked one while striking out seven.  He fell to 1-3 with the loss.
