Javelinas Split with #12 Cameron

Chris Brown picked up a win on Saturday  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team defeated #12 Cameron University 8-5 and lost 8-7 in a doubleheader on Saturday at Nolan Ryan Field in Lone Star Conference play.  (Game 1, Game 2)

In the first game, the Aggies (34-12, 25-11) put five runs on the board in the top of the second inning.  They would not score again the rest of the game as Javelina (19-26, 15-21) freshman Chris Brown (Humble/Nimitz HS) allowed just two hits, no runs and no walks while striking out six batters in 5.2 innings to pick up his fourth win of the season.

The Hoggie offense scored three times in the bottom of the third.  Brandon Rohr (Anaheim, CA/Orange Lutheran HS) and James Brown (Corpus Christi/King HS) each singled to lead off the inning and each would eventually score.  A.J. Hecker (Orange/Bridge City HS) had an RBI single and scored in the inning.

The Javs took the lead in the sixth inning when they scored five times with two outs after an Aggie error extended the inning.  Hecker tied the game with a bases loaded, two-run single.  Clifton Thomas (San Diego, CA/El Cajon Valley HS) scored the go ahead run on after another Aggie error.  Hecker finished the game with two hits, two runs and three RBI’s.  The team handed Logan Grimes his first loss of the season to drop his record to 7-1.

In the second game, the Aggies led 6-1 after five and a half innings and this time they held on for an 8-7 victory.  Josh Barnett led the team with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate, scoring four times, stealing two bases and hitting a triple.  Chris Caves stroked two doubles, drove in four runs and stole a base.  Thomas Dicker had a double and drove in two runs while Clint Powell hit a solo home run.  Jason Smith pitched 7.0 innings to pick up his fifth win of the season and Keith Powell closed out the game for his eighth save.

Trailing by five runs in the sixth inning, the Javelinas mounted a comeback that came up just short.  Hecker hit a three-run homer in the sixth, his fifth of the season.  The team scored twice in the eighth and put one more run on the board in the ninth, but it was not quite enough.

Philip Johnson (Malibu, CA/Malibu HS) and Hecker each had three hits to lead the Javelina offense.  Johnson had the teams only double of the game.  Robert Cox (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) had two singles and drove in a run while Thomas had a single, stole a base and scored two runs.  Dan Rogers (Redwood City, CA/Woodside HS) was handed the loss on the mound after lasting 3.0 innings and allowing five runs.  Steven Hooker (Houston/Spring Woods HS) pitched well in relief allowing just one earned run and striking out four in 4.0 innings.

The Javelinas travel to St. Edward’s on Tuesday for one nine-inning game that will start at 2 o’clock.
