Rattlers Top Javs in 9th

Robert Cox went 3-for-5 with a double and a home run on Tuesday.  SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The St. Mary’s University baseball team scored an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth inning on Tuesday night to defeat visiting Texas A&M-Kingsville, 5-4 at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium.  (box score)

The Rattlers (22-11) jumped out to an early lead scoring two runs in the second and another in the third inning.  The Javelinas (14-22) tied the game in the top of the fifth inning when Robert Cox (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) hit a three-run home run.  The Hoggies took their first lead of the game in the sixth inning when Adrian Williams (Victoria/Memorial HS) led off with a double and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Rattlers retied the game in the bottom the seventh inning.  Weston Barros doubled with one out and later scored when the Javs committed an error with two outs.  The Rattlers won the game in the bottom of the ninth when another error extended the inning and allowed Danny Cantu’s two-out single to win the game.

Cox led the Javelina offense with one of his best games of the season.  He went 3-for-5 with three RBI’s, a double and a home run.  A.J. Hecker (Orange/Bridge City HS) also went 2-for-4 at the plate.  On the mound, Ryan Torres pitched a solid four innings to start the game and then Steven Hooker (Houston/Spring Woods HS) and Tim Jones (Lake Jackson/Brazoswood HS) each pitched well in relief.  Hooker went 3.0 innings allowing three hits, one unearned run and no walks while striking out two.  Jones went 1.2 innings allowing two hits, one unearned run and one walk and was unfortunately tagged with the loss.

The Rattlers matched the Javelinas with eight hits.  Cantu, David Vaio and Baros each had a pair of hits.  Baros added a double and two RBI’s.  Courtney Behrend started the game on the mound for St. Mary’s and lasted 5.0 innings striking out five batters.  Jonathon Perez picked up the win as he allowed just one hit and one walk in 2.1 innings to close out the game.

The Javelinas are back in action on Friday at 3 o’clock when they host Lone Star Conference rival Tarleton State for a doubleheader.
