Hoggies Top Dust Devils

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team scored runs in six of the first seven innings of the game en route to an easy 14-5 non-conference victory over visiting Texas A&M International on Tuesday night at Nolan Ryan Field.  (box score)

The Javelinas (10-16) pounded out 14 hits on the evening as eight of the nine starters in the lineup had at least one hit.  The team was very close to 10-run ruling the Dust Devils (10-14), but the game lasted the full nine innings.

The top three hitters in the Hoggie lineup combined for six hits, eight runs and six runs batted in.  Robert Cox (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) went 2-for-5 with three runs and two RBI’s, Brandon Rohr (Anaheim, CA/Orange Lutheran HS) was 2-for-5 with three runs and three RBI’s and Travis Earles (Houston/Cy-Falls HS) was 2-for-4 with two runs, a double, stolen base and an RBI.

Further down the order, Luis Diaz (Santa Ana, CA/Cypress College) went 3-for-3 with three RBI’s, one run and two hit by pitches as he reached base all five times he came to the plate.  AJ Hecker (Orange/LSU-Eunice) cracked his second home run of the year and drove in two runs.  Chase Garcia (Victoria/Memorial HS) swatted his first career extra base hit, a double and scored twice.

On the mound, the Javs had five pitchers combine to allow just three hits in the game.  Daniel Rogers (Redwood City, CA/Santa Rosa JC) continued his excellent string of pitching with 4.0 strong innings of work.  He allowed two hits, one unearned run and three walks while striking out two to improve to 3-0 on the season.  Chris Brown (Humble/Nimitz HS), Steven Hooker (Houston/Spring Woods HS) and Tim Jones (Lake Jackson/Brazoswood HS) closed out the game with 4.2 innings of scoreless relief.  Jones allowed the only hit while the three combined to allow no walks and strike out four batters.

The Dust Devils managed to put together a four run fifth inning without the aid of a single hit when they walked five times and were hit by a pitch once.  Otherwise, the International offense was stagnant.  All three hits were of the single variety.  B.J. Valadez started the game and lasted just one inning while allowing three runs to earn the loss.

The Javelinas are back in action on Friday at West Texas A&M for a 3 o’clock doubleheader.
