Greyhounds Too Much for Hoggies

Erik Gomez continues to hit well for the Javelinas  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Visiting Eastern New Mexico proved to be too much to handle for the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team on Saturday afternoon as the Greyhounds took a pair of games, 7-5 and 5-4 in Lone Star Conference action at Nolan Ryan Field.  (Game 1, Game 2)

In the first game, the Greyhounds (14-12, 11-9) scored four runs in the first inning and held on for the victory.  Freddy Carmona and Paden Vendrely struck the big blows in the inning.  Carmona had an RBI double while Vendrely hammered a two-run homer to make it 4-0.

The Javelinas (9-16, 6-14) responded in the bottom half of the inning as Adrian Williams (Victoria/Memorial HS) and Erik Gomez (El Paso/Socorro HS) each came through with two-out RBI’s.  Williams drove in a run with a double while Gomez scored another on a single.  Both teams added another run in the second inning.

In the fourth inning, the Greyhounds took a 7-3 lead on a Seth Clabaugh two-run homer.
The Hoggies valiantly attempted a comeback.  In the bottom of the fifth, Gomez drove in Travis Earles (Houston/Cy-Falls HS) with a sacrifice fly.  In the seventh inning, the team loaded the bases with no outs, but could only score once.

The Javelinas out hit the Greyhounds, but the big first inning proved to be too much to overcome.  Russell Campbell picked up the win going 4.1 innings allowing nine hits and four.  Erik Orsak picked up his first save of the season as he pitched the final 2.2 innings allowing just one hit and an unearned run.

Earles, Williams, Philip Johnson (Malibu, CA/Malibu HS) and Brandon Rohr (Anaheim, CA/Orange Lutheran HS) each had two hits for the Hoggies.  Chris Brown (Humble/Nimitz HS) was handed the loss after lasting only one inning on the mound.  Tim Hanan (Groves/Port Neches-Groves HS) pitched six solid innings in relief allowing just six hits, two runs and one walk while striking out four.

In the second game, the Javelinas scored first when Williams doubled and scored on Thomas’ single in the second inning.  They added two more runs in the fourth inning when James Brown (Corpus Christi/King HS) came through with a two-out, two-run single to make it a 3-0 ballgame.

The Greyhounds scored an unearned run in the fifth inning and then exploded for another big inning in the sixth.  They scored four times in the inning by capitalizing on five hits, including four in a row with two doubles involved.  That would prove to be enough runs for the Hounds to grab their third victory in the four game series.

In the ninth inning, the Javelinas made a late rally.  First, Thomas singled and advanced to second on an error.  With two outs, Robert Cox (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) came through with a single to score Thomas and he advanced to second on another error.  Unfortunately, the Hoggies were unable to score the tying run.

Tyler Doughty pitched five innings in relief for the Greyhounds allowing three hits and one unearned run while striking out three batters to pick up the victory.  Garrett Cook led the offense with three hits, two doubles, two runs and an RBI.

Tim Jones (Lake Jackson/Brazoswood HS) was handed his third loss of the season for the Hoggies.  He went 7.0 innings allowing eight hits, five runs and two walks while striking out four.  Will Mettlach (Hallettsville/McAllen HS) pitched 2.0 innings in relief allowing just one hit while striking out two.  Cox, Earles, Thomas and Brown each had two hits apiece for the offense.

The Javelinas play host to Texas A&M International on Tuesday night at six o’clock.
