Hoggies Drop First Game

  WEATHERFORD, OKLAHOMA – The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team dropped the first game of a Lone Star Conference doubleheader at Southwestern Oklahoma State on Friday, 9-7.  The second game was called after seven innings due to darkness with the score tied 9-9.

The Javelinas (4-4, 3-2) jumped out to an early lead when James Brown tripled and scored on a Travis Earles single in the first inning.  The Bulldogs came back with lone runs in the second and third innings to take the lead.

The Bulldogs scored four runs in the fourth inning and three more in the sixth inning to take a commanding 9-3 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning.  The Hoggies mounted a late comeback in the seventh inning.  They put their first four runners on base and Clifton Thomas struck the big hit with a two-run triple with one out.  Unfortunately, the Javelinas were unable to score another run.

The Hoggies outhit the Bulldogs, 12-9 in the game.  Brown went 2-for-5 with two runs, a triple, a home run and an RBI.  Thomas Miller had two doubles and Philip Johnson had two singles.  Sam Strickland was tagged with the loss on the mound.

Tyler Powell led the Bulldogs with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with three RBI’s.  Rafef Alvarez picked up the win pitching 1.1 innings in relief.

The two teams will finish up the series on Saturday starting at 1 o’clock.
