KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The #15 St. Mary’s University baseball team scored eight runs in top of the second inning and never looked back in defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville, 17-7 on Tuesday night at Nolan Ryan Field.
The Rattlers (6-0) began the second inning with three straight singles to load the bases. Back-to-back walks scored two runs and then Grant Harrelson belted a two-run double and Reagan Moczygemba drove in two runs with a single.
The Rattlers scored another run in the third inning and then plated four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Moczygemba finished the game with three hits and six RBI’s. Colin Stock cracked the game’s only home run in the fifth inning and scored three runs in all. Harrelson and Jonathan Cisneros each scored three runs as well.
The Javelinas (1-1) scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Travis Earles (Houston/Blinn JC) cleared the bases with a three-run double. The Hoggies put runners in scoring position in both the third and fourth innings, but could not score a run.
The Javs finally got back on the board in the sixth inning. Chase Garcia (Corpus Christi/A&M-Corpus Christi) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Luis Diaz (Santa Ana, CA/Cypress JC) plated another run with a single.
Earles led the Javelina offense with three hits, a walk and a hit by pitch in five plate appearances. Clifton Thomas (San Diego, CA/El Cajon Valley HS) had a double and scored two runs.
The Rattlers pounded out 14 hits, six extra base hits and walked 12 times. Alfonso Maldonado pitched 4.2 innings in relief to earn the victory while Keith Kieschnick (Bay City/Bay City HS) was tagged with the loss in his first career pitching appearance.
The Javelinas open up Lone Star Conference play on Friday at 3 o’clock when they host East Central University in a double header at Nolan Ryan Field.
