KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Behind the 1-2 punch of Antwan Mullins (Katy/Cinco Ranch HS) and Flavio Milam (Killeen/Ellison HS) and a stifling defense, the Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team remained perfect at home on the season after a 66-50 win over Southeastern Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court. The Javelinas (8-2) used a 20-4 run over the final eight minutes of the first half to turn a close game into a blowout. In the second half, the team never led by fewer than 14 points and led by as many as 23 points at one point in time.
Mullins, the reigning Lone Star Conference South Division Offensive Player of the Week, had another strong outing with 19 points and seven assists. He went 5-of-8 from three-point range and also added three defensive rebounds while shutting down the Savage Storm’s (4-7) best player, Mychal Horn. Horn finished the game with just six points with two coming on a break-away lay-up when Mullins was not in the game.
Milam had one of his most efficient offensive games of the season. He scored 20 points on just 13 shots as he went 3-for-5 from three-point range and was 5-of-6 at the charity stripe. He added six rebounds and two steals.
The Javelinas as a whole dominated the glass as they pulled down 18 more rebounds than the Storm, including 19 offensive rebounds. Marcus Ford (Colorado Springs, CO/Mesa Ridge HS) led the team with nine rebounds in just 22 minutes off the bench. The team shot 39.3 percent from the field, made 9-of-23 three-pointers and was 9-for-14 at the foul line. They committed only 10 turnovers in the game.
The Storm shot 40.4 percent from the field, made 3-of-13 three-pointers and were 5-for-8 at the foul line. Williams Slones led the team with 14 points, five rebounds and three blocks.
The Javelinas are back in action on Monday night at home at 7 o’clock against Lone Star Conference North Division rival East Central University.
