Hogs Topple Rams

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team made short work on visiting Huston-Tillotson University on Saturday afternoon at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court winning by a 107-68 margin.

The Javelinas (4-1) came out of the gates quickly as they outscored the Rams (2-5) 60-23 in the first half.  The Hoggies hit on 66.7 percent of their first half shot while limiting the Rams to a 27.6 percent showing.

The second half saw the Javelinas empty the bench as all 12 players played at least 10 minutes in the game.  They reached the century mark in points for the first time since a 107-41 win over National Christian University on December 15, 2001.

Javelina senior guard Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS) led the way with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor, including a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range.  Four of the five starters reached double figures as Dyana Bullinger (Spring/Klein HS) and Rochelle Ikeni (Fresno, CA/Roosevelt HS) each had 10 points.  Kayla Naylor (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) added 12 points and a game high eight assists.

Coming off the bench for the Javelinas, sophomore Kelly Bastow (Bunbury, Western Australia) drained four three-pointers en route to a career high 12 points.  Ursula Hill (Cypress/Cy-Fair HS) added nine points and seven assists.

The Javelinas shot 60.3 percent from the field for the game and went 14-of-25 from three-point range, tying the school-record they set on Friday for most three-pointers made in a game.  They out rebounded the Rams by a 45-27 margin and had 27 assists against 21 turnovers.

The Rams were led by Kevetta Williams’ 24 points and six rebounds off the bench.  She went 8-for-14 from the field and 8-for-8 at the foul line.  Sheneka Mason added 16 points and four steals while Kandice Smith and Brittney Jones each chipped in with 11 points apiece.

The Rams shot 38.1 percent from the field, made 2-of-13 three-pointers and were 18-for-21 at the foul line.

The Javelinas are back in action on Monday night at 6 o’clock against Texas A&M-International at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
