Records Fall in Hoggie Win

  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – For the first time in seven years, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team reached 90 points in a game.  The Javelinas improved to 3-1 on the season with their 90-60 victory over Lone Star Conference North Division rival Texas A&M-Commerce.

The Javelinas knocked down a school record 14 three-pointers in the game eclipsing the previous record of 13 trifectas against Philadelphia University on November 4, 2000.

The Javelinas made up for a 101-75 loss last year to the Lions.  It was the team’s worst loss of the season.  This year’s win was the team’s biggest since beating Texas Luthern, 93-48 on November 23, 2002.

The game began with the both teams going back and forth at each other.  After 5:45 the Lions (0-3) led by a score of 14-12.  Over the next 11 minutes of play, the Javelinas went on a 24-2 run.  The run began with two three-pointers by Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS) and included five total three-pointers.

Senior Kayla Naylor (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) capped off the half for the Javelinas with the team’s eighth three-pointer of the game to give them a 41-20 lead at the break.  The Hoggies forced 17 first half turnovers and scored 18 points off those turnovers.

The Javelinas kept things going in the second half and led by as many as 44 points before settling for the 30-point victory.

The Javelinas shot 60.6 percent from the field in the second half and 53.7 percent from the field for the game.  They connected on 14-of-30 three-point attempts with six different players making at least one while Naylor and Dyana Bullinger (Spring/Klein HS) each made four triples.

The Hoggies had five different players score in double figures.  Soza led the way with 22 points, five rebounds and four steals.  Naylor scored a career high 17 points, dished out four assists and had three steals.  Bullinger added 12 points and six assists while Angela Franklin (Vacaville, CA/Vanden HS) and Ursula Hill (Cypress/Cy-Fair HS) each had 10 points apiece.  Hill also dished out five assists.

The Javelinas pulled down 12 more rebounds than the Lions, scored 22 more points in the paint and 18 more points off turnovers.

The Lions were led by Nakazi Glover’s 16 points off the bench.  Mattilyn McIntyre added 11 points while Anisha Ingram chipped in 10.  The Lions shot 53.3 percent from the field, made 6-of-10 three-pointers and were 6-of-9 at the foul line.  They committed 28 turnovers in the game.
