Javelinas Sneak by Rattlers

  SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team pulled out at 66-62 win at St. Mary’s University on Tuesday night at Bill Greehey Arena. (box score)

The Javelinas (3-0) led for most of the game and only trailed for a total of 1:31.  The team’s biggest lead of the night came after Adan Montalvo (La Joya/La Joya HS) drained two three-pointers in the final 2:08 of the first half to make it 36-28 heading into halftime.  They held a 2-to-6 point lead nearly the entire second half.

The Rattlers (2-2) briefly led the game late in the second half.  First, Jeremy Fonteneaux hit a jumper to make it 52-50 St. Mary’s with 4:20 remaining and then Brad Hubenak hit two free throws to make it 54-52 Rattlers with 3:42 left.  Each time the Javelinas were able to score on their next trip down the court.

The Hoggies took the lead for good on a layup by Naquawn Lee (San Antonio/East Central HS) with 2:49 left.  The Javelinas clinched the game by making 6-of-8 free throws in the final 41 seconds.  Royce Gaye (Houston/Klein HS) knocked down two free throws with seven seconds left to provide the winning margin.

The Javelinas had four players score in double figures in the game.  Antwan Mullins (Katy/Cinco Ranch HS) led the team with 21 points while making 3-of-4 three-pointers.  Montalvo came off the bench to score 15 points while also making 3-of-4 three-pointers.  Gaye had 10 points and a team high seven rebounds.  Marcus Ford (Colorado Springs, CO/Lamar CC) came off the bench to lead the team with four steals. 

The Hogs shot 36.7 percent from the field, made 7-of-14 three-point attempts and 15-of-19 free throws.  They had just 28 rebounds with 20 coming on the offensive end.  They had 12 assists and committed only 11 turnovers.

The Rattlers were led by 18 points from Curtis Mitchell.  Darren Lee added 10 points off the bench.  They shot 44.2 percent from the field, made 1-of-8 three-pointers and 23-of-26 foul shots.  They pulled down 37 rebounds, but committed 23 turnovers.

The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday at Incarnate Word at 4 o’clock.
