Lawton, Okla. -- Texas A&M-Kingsville freshman Steven Hooker pitched his first collegiate complete game as the Javelinas split a pair at Cameron, winning the first game 4-3 and dropping the nightcap 5-1.
The split leaves the Javelinas with an overall record of 24-22 and a 19-16 Lone Star Conference mark.
Hooker allowed just two earned runs on six hits while striking out six to even his record at 3-3. It was Hooker's third start of the season, his first in conference play and his first start in a month.
Owen Weaver and Will Mettlach (McAllen) each had three hits as the Hogs out-hit the Aggies 12-6.
Erik Gomez drove in the first run of the game in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly.
After Cameron tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second, A&M-Kingsville responded with game-changing three-run fifth.
After one out, Joe Hamon walked and Weaver singled. Freshman Ryan Sinclair, playing in just his sixth game of the year, doubled to drive in Hamon to give the Hogs a 2-1 lead. One out later, this time with two outs, fellow freshman Mettlach singled to center to drive in Weaver and Sinclair to make it 4-1.
The Javelinas committed three errors in the seventh, allowing Cameron to score two runs, but Hooker buckled down to retire seven of the last eight batters he faced to end the game.
In the nightcap, each team had just five hits, but the Javelinas were shutout until the top of the seventh when Robert Cox (Calallen) doubled and Gil Perez (Odem) doubled to drive him in.
Tim Jones pitched well, allowing only one earned run while striking out seven in 5.1 innings.
The Javelinas will try and earn a split in the four-game series when the two teams meet in the series finale Sunday at 12 noon.
