Hogs Get A Pair Of Walk Off Wins

Javelinas win 9-8 in 10 Innings and 4-3 In bottom of the seventh.

KINGSVILLE – Owen Weaver and Joe Hamon each had a walk off, game-winning run batted in as the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas swept a Lone Star Conference doubleheader from the West Texas A&M Buffaloes, 9-8 and 4-3.

The Javelinas rallied from an 8-3 deficit by scoring five runs in the bottom of the eighth in game one and trailed 3-2 until the bottom of the sixth of game two.

Weaver took a bases loaded walk in the 10th inning of the first game to give the Hogs the win in the opener.  Hamon came through with a run-scoring single through the left side that scored Chase Myrick in the bottom of the seventh to give the Javelinas the victory in the nightcap.

"It’s always good to find a way to win," head coach Russell Stockton said. "Sometimes you have to earn it every step of the way."

Weaver was four-for-seven on the day with three RBIs while Hamon was four-for-nine with a pair of RBIs.  Weaver has now hit safely in 15 of his last 16 games.

With the sweep, the Javelinas improved to 18-14 and 13-10 in the Lone Star Conference.

The Buffaloes fell to 7-22 and 4-18 in the LSC play.

In game one, Mario Gonzalez (Premont) improved his season record to 4-2 with two innings of scoreless relief pitching.

Seven Javelina batters had multi-hit games in game one as the Hogs had 16 hits.

A&M-Kingsville had the lead off man reach base in eight innings and had the first two batters reach in five innings.

West Texas A&M scored five runs in the top of the first off starter Josh Livingston.

The Hogs rallied for two in the bottom of the first as Myrick led the inning off with a walk and scored on a Weaver single to center field. With two outs, Taylor Everett doubled to left center field to score Weaver and cut the Buffalo lead to 5-2.

The Buffaloes got another run in the fifth inning to make it 6-2.

The Javelinas cut the deficit back to three, 6-3, in the bottom of the sixth inning. Erik Gomez led the inning off with a single to center field and scored on a Hamon single to right.

West Texas A&M pushed the lead back up to five, 8-3, with a two-out, two-run home run by Shanks.

The Javelinas put together one of their biggest innings of the year with a five-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game. After loading the bases with one out, Lee Venegas cleared them with a triple to left center field and cut the Buffalo lead to 8-6. Wiley Crowson then doubled to left to bring in Venegas and make it a one-run game. Crowson later scored the tying run on a Myrick single to left field.

The Buffaloes threatened to take the lead right back in the top of the ninth, putting runners on the corners but Gonzalez forced a groundout to end the inning and keep the game tied at 8-8.

The Javelinas put the first two batters in the 10th inning on. Crowson singled through the left side to start the inning and Gomez was hit by a pitch. Then with two outs, a pair of walks, the first one intentional, to Hamon and Weaver allowed the winning run to come in for A&M-Kingsville.

"Finally we were able to put together back-to-back hits and that’s what you need to win," Stockton said.

In the second game, Tim Jones pitched a complete game seven-hitter to even his record at 3-3.

The Buffaloes again gave themselves an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning.

Just like the first game, the Hogs answered in their half of the first. James Brown (Corpus Christi King) took a one-out walk and came home on a Weaver single through the right side that cut the Buffalo lead in half, 2-1. The Javelinas then loaded the bases with Hamon coming home on a fielder’s choice to tie the game, 2-2.

The Buffaloes retook the lead in the top of the third inning with a two-out run by McLaughlin.

The Javelinas again tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Thomas Miller led the inning off with a single through the left side and advanced to third on an Everett double down the left field line before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Will Mettlach (McAllen).

Myrick led off the bottom of the seventh with a single through the right side before scoring the winning run on Hamon’s single.

The Hogs will close out the series with the Buffaloes Saturday at noon at Nolan Ryan Field.
