Portales, N.M. -- Needing a win to stay in third place in the Lone Star Conference South Division, the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas won in impressive fashion, demolishing Eastern New Mexico on its homecourt 61-47 at Greyhound Arena. Click here for stats.
The win improved the Javelinas record to 15-7 overall, 4-3 in the Lone Star Conference South Division and 5-3 on the road. Eastern New Mexico fell to 6-16 overall and 0-7 in conference play.
Clyde Johnson and Juan Lanauze led the Javelinas with 13 points apiece. Johnson had a team-high seven rebounds while Lanauze made 6 of 7 shots from the floor. Stephen Story came off the bench to scored 10 points and added five rebounds in just 18 points while point guard Wendell Mulkey added seven rebounds, eight assists and just one turnover in 34 points.
Mulkey also held Eastern's leading scorer, Justin Redman-Trotter, to just four points on 1-of-8 shooting. Redman came into the game averaging 18 points per game and had 20 against the Javelinas in Kingsville back in January.
The Javelinas pounded the Greyhounds on the boards, out-rebounding them 43-28, the largest rebound margin of the season.
"We had to get this one to start the second half of the conference season and we got it," said Javelina head coach Pete Peterson. "Our defense just got stop after stop. Wendell Mulkey deserves a pat on the back for the job he did tonight on their point guard. We've got five (conference) games left and we are still in the hunt."
The Javelinas put together a stifling defensive performance in the first half, holding the Greyhounds to just 17 points and 25 percent shooting in gaining a 33-17 halftime advantage.Â
The Hogs led by 10 (16-6) just eight minutes into the game, increased the advantage to 19 (31-12) with three minutes left in the half and held a 16-point advantage at the break.
The Javelinas held the Greyhounds without a field goal for 7:21 in the first half.
The second half was much of the same as A&M-Kingsville build the lead to as many as 22 (48-26) and never led by fewer than 13 in cruising to the victory.
The Javelinas travel to nationally ranked Tarleton State Wednesday.
