Javs Cruise Past Cameron

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – An early 15-0 run by the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team gave them all the breathing room they would need against visiting Cameron University on Saturday in a 67-48 win at the Steinke Center. (box score)

Javelina (4-3) junior Angela Franklin (Vacaville, CA/Vanden HS) got the team off to a good start scoring 11 points in the first seven minutes of the game to give the team a 22-10 lead.  The story of the first half was the outside shooting of the Hoggies.  Juniors Dyana Bullinger (Spring/Klein HS) and Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS) each drained a trio of three-pointers as the team went 9-of-16 from behind the arc as they built up a 49-25 halftime lead.

The Aggies (3-3) showed some life to start out the second half.  They closed to within 12 points after a three-pointer by Megan Atkins with 14:33 to play that capped a 14-2 run.

The Hogs would reassert themselves and scored the next nine points of the game to reclaim a 21-point advantage and the Aggies would get no closer than 18 points for the rest of the game.

The Javelinas shot 58.1 percent from the field in the first half, but were just 4-of-21 from the field in the second half.  Fortunately, their free throw shooting did not abandon them as they made all eight of their second half attempts.

The Javs had four players score in double figures with Franklin (13), Bullinger (12), Soza (11) and senior LaKeisha Jones (Winnsboro, LA/Crowville HS) doing the honors.  Jones finished with a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double.  Point guard Ursula Hill (Cypress/Cy-Fair HS) finished with seven points and seven assists.  The Javs were 12-of-14 at the free throw line.  The team out rebounded the Aggies by a 45-28 margin, but committed 10 more turnovers than the opposition.

The Aggies did not have any play score in double figures, but Kristi Taylor and Bobbi Coleman each led the team with nine points apiece.  Atkins led the squad with seven rebounds and three blocks.  They shot just 27.3 percent from the field for the game and were only 4-of-21 from three-point range.  They finished the game 14-of-22 from the foul line.

The Javelinas are now riding a four game winning streak for the first time since the 2000-01 season when the team had a 17-game winning streak and advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.

The team travels to LSC North rival Texas A&M-Commerce next Saturday for a game that has been moved to 7 o’clock after being originally scheduled for 2 o’clock.
