Javs Win Fourth Straight

LAREDO, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team defeated Texas A&M International on the road, 55-51 on Tuesday night. (box score)

The Javelinas (4-2) played very well on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor in the first half against the Dustdevils (2-4).  The Javs took a 29-15 lead into the break in large part because they held TAMIU to just 23.1 percent shooting from the floor.

In the second half, the Javelinas led by as many as 17 points and still led by 14 points after a Flavio Milam (Killeen/Ellison HS) jumper with 7:35 to play.  The Dustdevils put together an 11-0 run over a 2:20 span to cut the lead to 49-47 with 2:56 left.

A&M-Kingsville senior point guard Wendell Mulkey (San Antonio/East Central HS) scored on the team’s next possession on his only shot of the game.  With under a minute to play, TAMIU cut the lead to two again.  This time the Hoggies did not score, but they were able to get a defensive stop.  From there, Adan Montalvo (La Joya/La Joya HS) and Clyde Johnson (San Antonio/Converse Judson HS) each made a set of free throws to hold off the Dustdevils.

Johnson and Robert Williams (Dallas/Kimball HS) led the Javelinas with 12 points apiece.  Williams added six rebounds while Johnson contributed four assists.  Anthony Jones (Fort Worth/U of Houston) added 11 points and four blocks off the bench in just 11 minutes of action.  Milam had a team high eight rebounds and four assists while Mulkey had seven boards, four assists, two blocks and two steals.  Mulkey’s two steals moved him into first place all-time on the career steals chart at A&M-Kingsville passing Remi Yusuf who had 180.

International was led by Jerante Morgan who scored a game-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor, including a 3-of-3 performance from three-point range.

The Javelinas limited the Dustdevils to 35.3 percent shooting for the game and it was the fourth time that the Hogs have held an opponent to 55 points or less.  The Hogs pulled down two more rebounds and had one more turnover than TAMIU.

The Javelinas are back in action on Thursday night against Lone Star Conference North Division rival Southwestern Oklahoma at 8 o’clock.  The game will have live stats, live audio and live video available at www.javelinaathletics.com.
