Javs Drop a Close One

Dyana Bullinger  ODESSA, TEXAS – For the second straight game, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team played great defense only to see the offense struggle in a loss.  On Monday night, the Javelinas dropped a 54-50 decision at UT-Permian Basin. (box score)
The Javelinas (0-2) and Lady Falcons (1-0) were nearly even in the stat line save for one category, three-point shooting.  The Falcons knocked down 7-of-15 trifectas compared to a 3-of-19 performance by the visiting Javs.  The four extra three-pointers proved to be the crucial four points in the ball game.
The two teams traded the lead 13 times and had a combined six ties.  The Javelinas dominated in the paint outscoring the Falcons, 28-16, but were neutralized by the air assault of the home team.
In the first half, the Javelinas held a 19-14 lead with under five minutes to play, but the Falcons closed the half on a 10-2 run to take a 24-21 lead into the break.  In the second half, the Javs opened with a 14-4 run that featured three-pointers by Dyana Bullinger (Spring/Klein HS) and Ursula Hill (Cypress/Blinn JC).  Unfortunately, the Hoggies would only score four points from the 11:56 mark of the second half to the 4:22 mark allowing the Falcons to reclaim the lead.
Javelina senior LaKeisha Jones (Winnsboro, LA/Paris JC) gave the team a 47-45 lead with 3:53 remaining, but the team would go 0-for-7 from the field and 3-of-7 at the foul line the rest of the game.  Falcon guard Tammy Acosta would first win the game for UTPB by scoring nine straight points to give them a 52-47 lead with 1:42 to play and then almost lost it by connecting on just 2-of-8 free throws down the stretch.
The Javelinas were led by Jones who had 11 points and a team high eight rebounds.  Angela Franklin (Vacaville, CA/Solano JC) added 10 points, seven boards and four steals.  The team shot 38.5 percent from the field and was 7-of-12 from the foul line.  The Hoggies committed just 19 turnovers after making 39 in the season opener.  They out rebounded the Falcons by a 38-33 margin.
The Falcons were led by Acosta’s 20 points and eight assists.  She was 7-for-10 from the floor, but just 5-of-13 at the free throw line.  Callie Norris added 13 points and eight rebounds.  They shot an identical 38.5 percent from the floor, but were just 7-of-17 at the foul line.  They had 13 assists and only 14 turnovers as a team.
The Javs are back in action on Saturday at Texas Woman’s University at 2 o’clock.
