Offense Struggles In Loss To Tarleton State

Kingsville – Kayla Naylor (Calallen) led the Javelinas with 11 points and hit 3 of 6 3-point shots, but it wasn’t nearly enough as Texas A&M-Kingsville fell at home to Tarleton State 55-43 at Kleberg Bank Court.  Click here for stats.

The loss dropped the Javelinas to 5-11 overall and 1-2 in the Lone Star Conference South Division. Tarleton State improved to 12-4 and 3-0 in league play.

The Javelinas couldn’t overcome 34 percent shooting and 26 turnovers.

“We did a good job early in the game of moving the ball and they had to chase us,” said Javelina head coach Scott Hyland. “But we got stagnant in the second half and we struggled.”

The Javelinas started the game quickly, grabbing a 19-14 lead with 7:12 left in the half. But A&M-Kingsville went scoreless the rest of the half and the game was tied at 19. Neither team scored over the final 5:15 of the half.

The scoreless streak continued for the Javelinas as they finally broke through on a pair of free throws by LaKeisha Jones nearly four and a half minutes into the second half, cutting the TexAnn lead to 23-19.

Tarleton State stretched the lead to 34-27 with 10 minutes left in the game, but the Javelinas put together a 5-0 keyed by a 3-point basket by Felicia Soza (Beeville), cutting the lead to 34-32.

But that’s as close as the TexAnns scored 10 of the next 12 points to put the game out of reach.

Texas A&M-Kingsville travels to Texas Woman’s University Saturday afternoon.
