Hevner Pitches Gem In Game Two Victory

   Kingsville- Senior left-hander Brandon Hevner, in his final start at Nolan Ryan Field, held the Angelo State offensive juggernaut to just five hits while striking out a season high nine batters to salvage a doubleheader split with a 4-1 victory.

   Angelo State bashed out 19 hits in the opener, beating the Javelinas 14-7 in the opener.

   The split leaves the Javelinas at 24-24 overall and 7-7 in the Lone Star Conference South Division. Angelo State, ranked 22nd in the nation, improved to 34-15 and 10-4 in league play.

Hevner, who missed a start last week with a sore shoulder, improved to 5-3 with his first complete game of the season. “It felt pretty good, although I felt a little sore,” said Hevner. “It felt really good to come out against these guys, it took a lot of focus, and a little bit of luck.”

            Angelo State losing pitcher Cody Broussard, allowed nine hits and four runs, and accumulated four errors and four strikeouts in the game. Broussard got first loss of the season, his record falls to 8-1 on the year.   

            Angelo State took an early 1-0 lead in game two, scoring one run off two hits in the third. Matt Lenderman sent in the run with his ground out RBI.

             The Javelinas came back in the bottom of the third with a lead of their own, plating two runners. Javier Molina hit a two-run RBI double to take the lead for the Hogs.

            The Hogs hit four consecutive shots for two runs to start the fourth inning, and stretch their lead to three, 4-1. Taylor Everett led off the inning with a single, and then Todd Mass added a double. Trey Karlen hit a single that scored both Everett and Mass.  

            Senior pitcher Raul Trevino took the loss in the opener, allowing eight hits and six runs in an inning and a third. His record on the season drops to 6-4.

            ASU pitcher Michael Gunter earns the victory with three strikeouts, and having allowed thirteen hits and four runs; his record moves to (7-3) on the year.

                        Chase Myrick went 3-for-6, collecting a double and a triple and Todd Mass had two doubles in the losing effort for the Javelinas.

            Angelo State opened the scoring in the first with a solo home run by Clay Calfee.

                The Javelinas quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first after three batters. Chase Myrick led off the game for the Javelinas hitting a single to left field, and then advancing to second off a sacrifice hit, and finally batted in by Javier Molina’s triple to the fence in center outfield.

             Angelo State took the lead accumulating four consecutive hits, and scoring five runs in the second inning.

             The Hogs closed the deficit to three, scoring two runs in the second, bringing the score to 6-3. Javelinas began the inning off with a leadoff double down the right line by Mass. Trey Karlen singled through the left side to advance Mass to third. Will Alexander laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Mass and advance Karlen to second. Karlen scored on a Justin Ariki’s single up the middle.

             Javelinas fall further behind in the fourth, 10-3, allowing Angelo State four unearned runs off four errors in the inning.

            Javelinas scored a run in the fifth off two hits, decreasing the ASU lead to10-4. Taylor Everett hit a single to center, and then was driven in by Mass’ RBI double to center.

            In the bottom of the sixth, Chase Myrick hit a two-out triple, but, the Javelinas could not take advantage of the scoring position.

            Angelo State added to their lead in the top of the seventh, 12-4, after Brett Nightingale hit a two-run homer.

            After two walked batters, Angelo State adds one more run off a wild pitch in the seventh totaling the score at 13-4.

            In the top of the ninth, ASU adds another run from Don Carter’s double RBI down the left line, increasing their lead to 14-4.

            The Javelinas score three runs after starting the ninth with three consecutive hits. Javier Molina and Cy Williams both singled, and then Taylor Everett drove in Molina with a single. A wild pitch then allowed Williams to gain home plate. Will Alexander hit in Everett for the final run with a ground out RBI.
