Kingsville – A pair of local pitcher earned victories for the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas as they swept West Texas A&M 10-8 and 9-5 Saturday to take the league opening series 4-0.
Freshman Mario Gonzalez (Premont) got the win in the nightcap, allowing no earned runs in six innings, while junior Josh Livingston (Corpus Christi Moody) got the victory in the opener.
The Javelinas are now 21-15 overall and 4-0 in Lone Star Conference play while West Texas A&M fell to 8-25 and 0-4.
Gonzalez improved to 2-4 in his longest stint of the year, allowing just five hits while striking out six and walking just one.
Joe Hamon and Clay Bockholt (Tuloso-Midway) each extended their hitting streaks to 11 games, the longest for the Javelinas this season.
Will Alexander, Taylor Everett and Trey Karlen each had four hits and drove in three runs in the twinbill.
The Hogs fell behind early in all four games, but rallied to win all four including the nightcap.
West Texas A&M scored an unearned run in the top of the second, but the Hogs answered right back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Cy Williams drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly, Karlen doubled and was driven in by a single from Alexander and the final run scored when Alexander stole third and home.
The Buffaloes scored another unearned run in the third to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Javelinas exploded for five runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Bockholt and Javier Molina started the innings with singles and then took advantage of two errors and a bases loaded walk to score the first two runs. Hamon scored later in the inning on a wild pitch, Karlen drove in a run with a ground out and Williams scored the final run by stealing home.
The two teams combined for 18 runs and 24 hits in game one.
Everett picked up his first three-hit game of the season while also driving two runs.
The Hogs jumped out to an 8-1 lead after a four-run first and a four-run third.
Everett got things going in the first with a two-run single, Hamon followed with a run-scoring single and Karlen drove in a run with a ground out.
In the third, Karlen singled to drive in his second run of the game to make it 5-1, followed by a run scoring single by Alexander and a two-run single by Chase Myrick.
But West Texas A&M cut the lead to 8-6 with a five run fourth.
Diego Nucete scored a run in the sixth on a wild pitch to make it 9-6, but West Texas got a run in the seventh and one in the eighth to cut the lead to one, 9-8.
Alexander singled in a run in the bottom of the eighth to finish the scoring.
Livingston worked six dangerous innings, allowing seven hits while leaving seven Buffalo runners on base to improve his record to 5-2. He allowed seven runs, but just four were earned.
Livingston left the bases loaded in the sixth with a strikeout to end the inning and left two runners stranded in the first and fourth innings.
Chris Stage came in and allowed an unearned run in 1 1/3 innings and got out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the seventh.
Jeremy Heatley came into the game in the eighth and got out of a first and third, one out situation with an inning ending double play.
Heatley ended the game by inducing the Buffaloes into another double play to earn his third save of the season.
