Hogs Get Clutch Hitting, Shutout Pitching In Sweeping East Central

KINGSVILLE – Brandon Hevner pitched a complete game two-hitter in the opener and Chase Myrick drove in the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth of game two as the Javelinas swept East Central 3-0 and 5-4.
The Javelinas improved to 15-10 while East Central fell to 6-18.
“Today was a day where everybody on the team got to play. Up and down the lineup everyone did a good job,” head coach Russell Stockton said. “In those back-and-forth games, I always have a saying, ‘Be ready when the game comes around’. Sometimes you go to your bench and make a call.”
Myrick went five-for-eight with a two RBI on the day. For the series he is seven-for-12 with four RBI.
“He’s a gamer,” Stockton said. “He’ll do whatever it takes to win a ball game.”
In game one, Hevner pitched his first complete game of the year, striking out five batters while walking none.
Riley Mann fell to 1-2 for the Tigers. He pitched a complete game giving up eight hits and three runs. He also recorded two walks and two strikeouts.
Taylor Everett went two-for-three for A&M-Kingsville in the game.
The Javelinas took a 1-0 lead in the second with Cy Williams hitting a sac fly to left field that brought in Javier Molina.
The Hogs added to the lead in the fifth Myrick batted in Clay Bockholt with a hit through the left side to make it a 2-1 game.
A Tiger error in the sixth allowed Everett to come home and make it 3-0.
In game two, Jeremy Heatley picked up the win to even his record at 1-1 with 2 1/3 innings of relief work. He allowed no hits and no runs while striking out five and walking two.
Derrick Romines dropped to 0-4 for the Tigers giving up three hits and one run in 2 2/3 innings. He also walked two and struck out three.
Diego Nucete gave the Javelinas a quick 2-0 in the bottom of the first with a 2-RBI double to left field that plated Myrick and Joey Hamon.
East Central responded in the top of the second when Clint Bowker had a hit through the left side that brought home Gus Bordones to make the score 2-1.
In the top of the fourth, the Tigers had their first five batters all reach base and took the lead. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Bowker hit a shot up the middle that brought in Bordones and Jared Owen to make it 3-2. The Javelinas were able to limit the damage though and get out of the inning only down by one run.
The Hogs took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth, 4-3, with a couple of two-out hits. The Javelinas tied it up at 3-3 with a hit by Everett up the middle that plated pinch runner Gil Perez. After stealing second, Everett scored the go-ahead run off of a single through the left side by pinch hitter Jeremy Wheeler.
East Central got a two-out rally of their own in the top of the seventh to even the game at 4-4 with the assistance of a couple of Javelina errors. After the first error allowed the inning to continue, the second allowed pinch runner T.J. Gaines score the tying run.
Heatley then came in for the Javelinas and got a groundout to end the rally and keep the game tied.
The Javelinas won it in the bottom of the eight when Trey Karlen led off the inning with a double then stole third before coming home on a Myrick ground ball for the 5-4 win.
The Javelinas will look to sweep the four-game series with East Central Saturday at noon.
