The win improved the Javelinas’ record to 2-7 and 1-3 in Lone Star Conference play while Eastern New Mexico fell to 4-5 and 0-5 in league play.

The Javelinas had a season-high 420 yards of total offense, while Eastern New Mexico, ranked first in the nation in rushing offense, had 396 total yards, 330 of it on the ground.

Greyhound quarterback Michael Benton had 193 yards on the ground and four rushing touchdowns.

But it was Garza who stole the show.

The Laredo native, who missed nearly all of last week’s game with a sprained ankle, became the first Javelina quarterback to throw for at least 300 yards in nearly two years.

Cory Miles threw for 353 against Angelo State on November 5, 2005.

His five touchdown passes broke the previous school record of four set by three different players, most recently by Miles in the same game against Angelo State in 2005.

Garza completed 22 of 31 passes with just one interception and broke the school record with his fifth scoring pass to tight end Rony Perard with 9:38 left in the game to give the Javelinas a 35-28 lead.

The Hog defense then stopped Benton when they needed to on an option play on third and eight from the Greyhound 28-yard line when Mike Martinez (Calallen) and Clayton Cretors (Harlingen) stopped Benton five yards short of a first down, forcing a punt.

The offense then drove 72 yards in 12 plays, taking 4:52 off the clock with freshman kicker Christian Brom (McAllen) converting a game-clinching 21-yard field goal with 2:30 left in the game.

Eastern did make it close by driving 74 yards in 1:35, scoring a touchdown with 55 seconds left to cut the lead to 38-35. Benton fumbled at the four yard line, but it was recovered by Tim Hammett in the end zone to cut the lead to 38-35.

Greyhound special team’s player Michael Carrasco recovered an onside kick at the Eastern 44-yard line with 51 seconds left to give Greyhounds one more chance.

But Javelina junior defensive end Jimmy Lugo (Alice) sacked Greyhound quarterback Carl Bouldin and senior defensive tackle Chris Williams recovered the fumble at the Greyhound 29-yard with 43 seconds left in the game to seal the victory.

The Greyhounds forced the first break of the second half when Peter Juve blocked Cody’s Smith’s punt which was recovered at the Javelina 32-yard line with seven minutes left in the third quarter.

Five plays later Benton ran it in from one yard out for his third touchdown of the night to tie the game at 21 with 5:04 left in the quarter.

Garza led his team right back, completing a 43-yard touchdown pass to Reyes with 3:33 left in the quarter to give the Javelinas a 28-21 advantage.

On the ensuing kickoff, Derrick Carter ripped the ball away from Greyhound returner Kyle Harris as he was headed out of bounds at the Eastern 19-yard line.

But Garza threw an interception at the Eastern six-yard line and Deven Sweet returned it to the Javelina 49-yard line.

On third and 13 from the Javelina 18-yard line, Benton ran up the middle for a first down to the two-yard line.

On the next play he scored his fourth rushing touchdown to tie the score at 28 with 12:04 left in the game.

Each team scored on their first possessions to start the game.

Eastern New Mexico drove 57 yards in 12 plays, 10 of them on the ground and scored on a one yard run by Benton.

The Greyhounds used two quarterbacks on the drive, starting Anthony Ramos, who completed a pair of passes for 12 yards, and Benton who ran five times for 25 yards.

The Javelina offense responded by going 68 yards in eight plays with Garza scrambling out of a near sack and completing a 29-yard scoring pass to tight end Rony Perard.

Garza went 4-for-5 on the drive for 56 yards.

But Eastern was not to be outdone, rambling 71 yards in seven plays with Benton, seemingly tackled at the line of scrimmage, breaking tackles and running 28 yards for score to make it 14-7 with 2:18 left in the quarter.

Late in the second quarter Eastern seemed poised to grab a two touchdown advantage when on first and goal from the Javelina seven-yard line, Benton fumbled in the ball into the end zone and Anthony Bates recovered in the end zone for a touchback.

The Javelina offense responded by driving 80 yards on eight plays with Garza completing a 14-yard touchdown pass to freshman George Reyes (Bandera) to tie the score with 2:01 left in the half.

After stopping Eastern on fourth down at the A&M-Kingsville 36-yard line, the Javelinas put together an impressive 64 yard drive in the final 23 seconds to grab a 21-14 halftime lead.

With two seconds left on the clock and the ball on the Eastern New Mexico 43-yard line, Garza completed a pass over the middle to receiver J.R. Hausey who cut back across the field, down the far sideline and scored as the clock ran out to end the half.

It was Hausey’s first touchdown as a Javelina.

Garza was extremely efficient in the first half, completing 14 of 17 passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns.

Benton nearly rushed for 100 yards in the first half, gaining 98 yards on 16 carries with two scores.

Each team had over 200 yards of total offense in the first half – Eastern with 223 and Texas A&M-Kingsville with 209.
