Defending one of the toughest home courts in Division II, the Abilene Christian Wildcats swept the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas 30-19, 30-21 and 30-17 in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams.
ACU (5-7, 1-0) has now won 36 of its last 38 home matches dating back to the 2003 season.
The loss snapped the Javelinas’ (3-9, 0-1) three-match winning streak.
Senior Danielle Godfrey (Houston Crosby HS) led the Javelinas with eight kills while freshman Chelsea Zunker (New Braunfels Canyon HS) added seven.
Madison Madrid (San Antonio Alamo Heights) had 14 digs while Kirby Krueger (New Braunfels Canyon HS) led the Javelinas with 12 assists.
The Javelinas and Wildcats were tied at 12 before ACU scored four consecutive points to take the lead for good and put the game away by scoring eight of the last nine points.
In game two, the Javelinas followed much of the same pattern, falling behind early, rallying to tie the match at 10, but the Wildcats scored 16 of the final 23 points to win game two.
The Javelinas took an early 7-4 lead in game three on the serves Krueger and Leslie Petros (Corpus Christi King HS).
But ACU put together a 14-2 run to put the game and the match out of reach.
The Wildcats had 40 kills to just 29 for the Javelinas and out-hit Texas A&M-Kingsville .234 to .017.
The Javelinas will try and bounce back Saturday afternoon in the Lone Star Conference match at Angelo State. The Rambelles opened LSC play by being swept at home Thursday night in three games by Tarleton State.
