Kingsville – Abilene Christian kicker Matt Adams kicked a 25-yard field goal as time expired to give the 19th ranked Wildcats a 41-38 win over the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas.
The Wildcats drove 72 yards in six plays over the final 1:03 of the game to set up the game winning field goal.
Javelina junior running backs Webster Patrick and Raymorris Miller each went over 100 yards rushing. Patrick had 103 yards on 17 carries and Miller added 105 yards on 20 carries.
Javelina freshman quarterback Jeremy Heatley threw a career-high three touchdown passes, two of them to junior wide receiver Jareko Taylor. Taylor finished with nine catches for 80 yards.
Texas A&M-Kingsville had a season-best 407 yards of total offense.
The Javelinas, who ran for only 12 yards two weeks ago in a loss to Midwestern State, ran for a season-high 240 yards.
Abilene Christian quarterback Billy Malone completed 18 of 36 passes
for 404 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver Jerale Badon had four
catches for 165 yards while Chris Morris had seven grabs for 122
yards. Wildcat running back Taber Minner ran 17 times for 109 yards.
ACU had 554 yards of total offense.
Trailing 24-14 at the half, the Javelinas opened the second half by
marching 74 yards on four plays with all the yards gained on the ground
including Webster Patrick’s 32-yard scoring run to cut the lead to 24-
21.
ACU then fumbled the ensuing kickoff at the Javelina 26-yard line.
The Javelina offense was stalled, they lined up for a field goal on
fourth down, but holder Steve Yaden ran 10 yards on the fake for a
first down. Then on third and eight from the 12, Yaden caught a
touchdown pass from Heatley to make it 28-24 with 10:38 left in the
third quarter.
ACU answered with a touchdown drive of their own to regain the lead
at 31-28.
Again, the Javelinas responded, as Scott Schlebach kicked a 26-yard
field goal to tie the game at 31 with 2:39 left in the third quarter.
With the Wildcats threatening to break the tie midway through the
four quarter, Javelina linebacker Mike Martinez stopped ACU running
back Chancy Campbell at the one on fourth down.
But two plays later, Heatley threw an interception that was returned
to the Javelina one-yard line. Minner ran it for the score on the next
play to make it 38-31 with 6:38 left.
After the two teams traded possessions, the Javelinas, with no
timeouts, drove 65 yards on five plays with Heatley completing a 6-yard
touchdown pass to Taylor to tie the game at 38 with 1:03 remaining.
Abilene Christian scored on the second play from scrimmage as
quarterback Billy Malone connected with Jerale Badon over the middle
for a 63-yard touchdown.
The Javelinas then turned the ball over on their first possession,
giving the Wildcats the ball on the Texas A&M-Kingsville 17-yard line.
But the Javelina defense halted the Wildcats including a stop of
fourth down and two from the Javelina 9-yard line.
Texas A&M-Kingsville’s offense then kept the momentum going, driving
91 yards on 11 plays and scoring the game tying touchdown on an 11-yard
run by Raymorris Miller.
The Javelina defense forced the Wildcat offense out on three plays
and took over at their own 39-yard line.
The offense again looked efficient, driving 61 yards in 13 plays,
capped by a 20-yard touchdown pass from Heatley to Taylor in the corner
of the end zone to give the Javelinas a 14-7 lead with 13:02 left in
the first half.
But Abilene Christian responded by scoring 17 consecutive points to
end the half and grab a 24-14 advantage.
One touchdown came on a 69-yard scoring pass from Malone to Chris
Morris, the second score was a 3-yard scoring run by Tabber Minner, and
the final was a 29-yard field goal by Matt Adams.
The Wildcats had 314 yards of total offense in the first half to 164
for the Javelinas.
After throwing an incompletion and an interception on his first two
passes, Heatley ended the half completing 10 of his last 15 passes for
72 yards and a score.
